'The Nine Lives of Chloe King': Meet TV's most dangerous love triangle

It's a classic story. Girl meets boy. Girl likes boy. Boy likes girl. Girls meets new boy. More liking ensues. Love triangle activated.

However, in most of those stories, Boy No. 1 doesn't die when the girl kisses him.

ABC Family's new drama "The Nine Loves of Chloe King" will introduce viewers to this summer's hottest -- and deadliest -- new love triangle.

Skyler Samuels plays Chloe King, a 16-year-old girl who discovers she is part of an ancient race called the Mai and may be their only hope for survival against human assassins. Her two love interests couldn't be more different. Brian, played by Grey Damon, is a charming and unpretentious human who Chloe instantly develops a crush on. Benjamin Stone's Alek is also a descendant of the Mai and acts as her protector who may just become something more along the way.

"Our little love triangle is a lot of fun and is taking some very unexpected twists," Samuels teases. "Season 1 is full of lots of steamy, romantic mysteries."

Let's meet the contenders vying for Chloe's heart:


Name: Brian (Damon)

Backstory: "I'm this kid whose mother has died. I kind of have a troubled past, I witnessed my mother dying when I was 15," Damon explains. "I come back to this town to get to know my father better and I run into Chloe King and sort of am just captivated by her."

Setback: Damon says Brian, who is just a regular ol' human, doesn't know Chloe's secret, which could prove to be fatal. "I'm very, very oblivious. it's actually sort of a conflict because the Mai can't kiss human beings. It'll kill them," he says. "So my character, who is in fact human, I just think it's something with me, you know? It's very frustrating!"

Setback part deux: "My father is actually involved with the people who are after Chloe." Ruh-roh! Could Brian be looking to inherit the family business in the future? Talk about star-crossed lovers -- they can't kiss and his dad is hunting her.



Name: Alek (Stone)

Backstory: "He's from the Ukraine, his parents were killed. He's an orphan and he went to England and grew up in England ," Stone explains. "He eventually moved to the U.S. to join the San Fransisco Mai."

Setback: Stone says Alek will act as Chloe's Mai mentor, helping her discover and use her powers. "He is pretty arrogant, pretty full of himself. He just likes to have fun. He takes a real interest in helping Chloe, teaching her, training her to use her powers and protect herself because she's in danger," he says. "This forces him to really, really care about her. He genuinely loves her because, you know, she's really cute, she's not like any other Mai. She's normal."

Setback part deux: Because he has to protect her, we're guessing Alek can come off a bit fatherly at times, especially when he tells her not to date Brian. "I don't really advocate dating humans because I know it just can't happen," Stone says. "So I'm trying to tell her, 'Don't date him.'"

Bonus: Two Mai can in fact kiss each other without one of them dying.
