'Game of Thrones' Season 2: Natalie Dormer cast as Margaery Tyrell
And "Game of Thrones'" Season 2 casting games begin..."The Tudors" actress Natalie Dormer is the first casting hire for the second season of HBO's hit fantasy drama and will join the show as a series regular, EW reports. Dormer played Anne Boleyn on the Showtime series.
Dormer is set to take on the role of Margaery Tyrell who -- spoiler alert! -- is pledged to marry Renly Baratheon, late King Robert's brother, as part of House Tyrell's play for Renly to seize the Iron Throne from King Joffrey and the Lannisters.
Dormer also has a role (Pvt. Lorraine) in the upcoming "Captain America" film starring Chris Evans.
Earlier this week, HBO denied reports that Gerard Butler would be joining the show as Stannis Baratheon, the oldest surviving brother of King Robert.
"Game of Thrones" returns in Spring 2012.

She is a great actress, but seriously- what were they thinking? She is way too old (looking) for the role. Margaery is supposed to be around 18- and without spoiling anything she needs to look that age or things to come will just seem gross.
Agree with Beth. Margaery is supposed to be of the same age as Sansa and Joffrey.
Of course, Stockard Channing played a teenager in Grease when she was 34...Alison Lohman is in her 30s and I suspect she could still pull it off.
Agree with the age thing, but hopefully she pulls it off. Seeing the headline I thought for sure she was cast as Melisandre.
Considering Sansa is supposed to be 11, I don't think this is really as big a deal as you're all making it out to be.
Has anyone considered that the years in A Song of Ice and Fire may be longer than our years? So for example, Sansa being 11 in the books may equate to her being 16 in our years. I can't say for sure but if they have 9 year long summers there is a good chance that the planetary rotations around their sun are quite different from ours.
First off Josh, good point, but no, their years are no different, they just mature differently, and Sansa is played by a 14 year old so thats not too bad, but this one playing Margery does seem odd, considering, as Beth said, what is to come, it will seem a bit "wrong", but she is not a big enough character to really worry about, I just hope the more important new characters get good actors to portray them, like Balon Greyjoy, Davos, Melisandre and of course, Stannis.
Well, Natalie Dormer certainly allows for a way to fill in the nudity/sex scene quotient in the show. She was supposed to be a few years older than Sansa, so I guess if they play her to be 20, this will work. I'm figuring that like Renly/Loras, she may have some scenes that are a little less uh, subtle, than in the books. There may also be some Deadwood style inspections....
Hoping that they do a good job on the casting for Melisandre... She has to be beautiful at the same time as filling everyone with fear. I'm also hoping she's really redheaded (or looks it) as some of the leaked auditions show a Latina actress auditioning for her. I find that hard to imagine working with the hair...
