'Doctor Who': John Barrowman on 'Torchwood's' Captain Jack staging a possible return
With "Doctor Who" officially renewed for a seventh season, and current companions Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill likely not around for the ride, the franchise may soon be placing personals ads for new supporting players.
But why not cull a companion from the current "Who"-verse?
Zap2it caught up with John Barrowman on the set of Starz upcoming "Torchwood: Miracle Day," and the actor told us that a return to the series that introduced his character, Captain Jack Harkness, is never out of the question.
"I've always said that if I'm asked to go back to 'Doctor Who,' I'll go at the drop of a hat," Barrowman tells us. "That's where Captain Jack got his beginnings. And it's already been discussed."
Barrowman says that both "Torchwood" creator Russell T Davies and current "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat have talked about the possibility of a return for Jack, who's been absent from the series since the 2008 episode "Journey's End." (We're not counting the silent cameo in former Doctor David Tennant's 2010 swan song, The End of Time: Part Two.")
"It's in the cards, but who knows whether it will happen?" says Barrowman, quick to add that his character does have special ties to David Tennant's version of the Doctor. "I like Matt Smith. He brings his own quirkiness to it... When a new Doctor starts, everybody goes along for the journey because they love the show. But then you attach yourself to that Doctor. There's a whole new generation who are now attached to Matt, and rightly so.... but David Tennant is my Doctor."
For now, Barrowman is focused on "Torchwood," which could very well find an extended life on Starz after the upcoming run, but the stateside filming of the British series begs the question of whether or not Barrowman is looking to make a bigger name for himself in America.
"I run myself like a business, and I enjoy the work I do," he says. "Of course I have ambition to work more in the U.S., but I will never turn my back on the U.K. and what I do there."
Scottish born, Barrowman actually spent a lot of his upbringing in American schools. And in 2010, he landed one of his most prominent roles here yet, as a recurring villain on ABC's "Desperate Housewives."
"I've always said that I would never just give up and leave the U.K. to come and seek work over here," he says, "but if work brings me over here, that's a different story. There are plans in the future for me to branch out a little more in this market, because, hey, you need a big swashbuckling gay man to do things, don't ya?"

I'd love to see Captain Jack make a return appearance - if for no other reason than to reassure some fans that Torchwood, despite now being co-produced in the US, is still part of the flock. The only spoiler is whether the fact Torchwood is co-produced by Starz, a competitor to BBC America, would disallow an appearance by Captain Jack. Or the Doctor on Torchwood (though given the expected increased adult content of the new Torchwood, that might not be allowed for a number of reasons).
Sorry to have to correct you, but John was not "silent" in his cameo, the David was.
Does the line "So, Alonzo. Going my way?" ring any bells?

Where did you get the information that Amy and Rory likely won't be back? I haven't seen anything to that effect.
Ishmael, Karen Gillan is filming a BBC drama called "We'll Take Manhattan" and Arthur Darvill is playing Mephistopheles in the Globe Theatre production of "Dr. Faustus". They've moved onto other projects, so it's all but confirmed that they'll be gone.
Actually, Davies created Captain Jack. He just happened to make his first appearance in an episode written by Moffat.
Also a little disappointed to hear his return entangles him with River Song. I'm not her biggest fan :/
