'Torchwood: Miracle Day': 5 things we learned from the official trailer
With "Torchwood: Miracle Day" nearly upon us (July 8 at 10 p.m. ET), Starz has finally stopped teasing fans with cryptic promos and baited the hook with an official trailer containing nearly 2 minutes of new footage.Snap judgment? It looks good -- very, very good.
It also sheds light on a few questions about the whole "everybody in the world becomes immortal" premise and how some of the new cast -- Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman, Lauren Ambrose among them -- will fit in with "Torchwood" originals John Barrowman and Eve Myles.
Here are our 5 biggest takeaways:
1. Not dying can be very gross
We had a sneaking suspicion that the whole miracle aspect of "Miracle Day" would lead to some nasty zombie people, and if the trailer is any indication, we were right. One shot of a burned, splattered and still moving corpse prompts a "What if you detached the head?" from Captain Jack and a very noticeable turn in the stomach.
2. More money,
Hello, cinematic grandeur. The Starz-ification of "Torchwood" promised a bigger budget and now we can see where they've put the money. Production quality here totally schools previous iterations of the series, with dramatic location shoots, careening helicopters, stunts galore and whole lot of explosions.
3. Jack Harkness still hasn't changed clothes
Alas, none of the money was funneled into a trip to Barney's for Captain Jack. He's still wearing a version of his World War II uniform -- which, really, is just fine with us.
4. Apocalypses make people do crazy things
We wondered how Oswald Jones (Pullman's lethal-injection-surviving murderer and child molester) would fit into the big picture, and apparently he's the face of "Miracle Day." Jones is showed chatting with power publicist Jilly Kitzinger (Ambrose) and then speaking on stage before a rapt crowd.
5. Gwen Cooper is the coolest mom ever
The early leader in the "Miracle Day" power rankings is Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), hands down. Not only do we see her channeling Season 2 "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with a bazooka, she can fire a pistol while holding a (laughing!) baby. Extra points for ending the trailer with one hell of a zinger. See for yourself...

The show will still never be the same without Ianto Jones. I hope the American version doesn't just shake him off...
I don't want galore of explosions, I just want galore of Ianto Jones.
Ianto is dead. D-E-A-D. Please, just move on.
It's "mum". Not "mom". Only retards say stupid things like that.
I wish the Ianto-lovers would extend their sadness to Tosh and Owen but I suppose that's a lost cause. And @Rob - you do realize that Starz is an *American* company right? We say "mom" in America, mainly, so really isn't it only retards who make assumptions or am I mistaken?
On the other hand, the trailer looks good enough that I may very well just give it a go even though I hadn't been terribly interested in the prospect of it after the way they ended Children of Earth...
oi mate, its 'Oswald Danes' not 'Oswald Jones'! get your facts right!
PS for the record, it is NOT a Starz original series!
sincerely the British fans

#1-4 How they realize they can't die actually? And if no one can't die, why they actually bother to celebrate a child killer, pedo, whatever he is cause he just can't die like the others.
#2 Money is probably spent in the cars racing and the explosion!
#5 And since when a mother put a baby front of the window where everyone can shoot easely the baby? So Gwen is the giga best mother of the world? Why? Because she put her baby in danger shooting with a gun near baby ears? Okay I'm not sure I agree with you on this.
#3 You kidding there right? Jack change his clothes. He never wear a tie or a black coat in Torchwood.
I'm so sorry to commented that, I wish Jen would not be too upset!
Oh dear, the Ianto arguments are still going. I adore Ianto dearly, but this is really old now. The thought of Torchwood without Ianto seems EVIL at the moment, but this is ridiculous. Please don't tell people to "get over it because he's dead." Do you watch Doctor Who? Do you know how many times Rory's died so far? So shut up.
"This video is not available in your country", is it? I have to say, even though Torchwood is a British series, I'm feeling quite downtrodden at the moment. It seems like they're focusing on the American audience so much that the Brits don't even get a look in! :( I hope Jack and Gwen are in it enough, I don't care too much about the new characters right now.
The early leader in the "Miracle Day" power rankings is Gwen Cooper...she can fire a pistol while holding a (laughing!) baby.
I fail to see why Gwen firing a gun in such a way that she makes the baby (laughing! or not) a perfect target in the window is so great. It looks more like child endangerment than like she's a kick-*** protective wonder-mother.
