'The Secret Circle' extended trailer: Gale Harold is a bad, bad man and other observations
"Once you're in, there's no way out."
The CW unveiled three clips for "The Secret Circle," Kevin Williamson's new drama, at the network upfronts last week.
Now, a six-minute trailer has been released which offers a closer look at The Circle -- the coven of witches Cassie (Britt Robertson) learns she's a member of after moving to her mother's hometown.
After hearing the series was picked up The CW, we went out and bought the book series by L.J. Smith to get a feel for the Circle, the characters, the universe, etc. One of our favorite parts of the book series was the power struggle between Diana and Faye, the idea of teenagers having all this power and deciding how it's harnessed. You can imagine our delight when we saw that very power struggle featured in the trailer.
Some of our other thoughts and observations:
-- Some fans were upset that the coven had been reduced from 12 to six members. After watching the trailer, the change should make sense. It's hard to fully develop and establish six characters, let alone 12, in a series. The other members (Henderson twins, Deborah, etc.) would have been glorified cardboard cut-outs had they been included.
-- The chemistry between Cassie (Robertson) and Adam (Thomas Dekker) is palpable and a highlight in the six minute preview. We hope the chemistry and friendship between Cassie and Diana (Shelley Hennig) is as dynamic, just so we actually can buy Cassie resisting Adam out of loyalty and respect for Diane.
-- Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) is to "The Secret Circle" what Damon is to "The Vampire Diaries." She's the group's wild card -- unpredictable and a bit unhinged. Tonkin's delivery of the line "Do you want to try that again because I didn't quite buy it. Did you?" was ace.
-- We feel like Gale Harold is going to steal every single scene he's in on the show, just like he basically stole this extended trailer. He was creepy as hell threatening Adam's father (Adam Harrington) and even creepier when he was putting on the nice guy act for Cassie... after killing her mother. We already love to hate him.
-- We like that the series will be exploring the older coven(s) more thoroughly than the books did. We always like some good adult drama going on (see: first season of "The O.C.") and we can't wait to find out what went wrong when they were practicing that lead to witchcraft being abolished.
-- We're a bit nervous about "TSC" airing right after "TVD." We don't think this show will move at the same breakneck pace, which isn't a bad thing, but we think fans will be expecting the storylines to move quicker before the show even begins. Make sense?
-- Kanye West music cue? Bad*ss. In fact, all of the songs (including Tinie Tempah's "Written in the Stars") used in the trailer are pretty stellar. Gold star for the music supervisor!
-- We live for a good Taylor Swift moment. Example: Nick (Louis Hunter) holding a sign in the window (Zap2it pet peeve alert!: Spell out the words next time, Nick! Laziness is no one's friend.):
Watch the extended trailer for "The Secret Circle" below then head on over to the comments to tell us if you'll be entering the Circle come September.

Gale, Gale, Gale. That's all I see. Nice.
Agree with every word I can verify from watching the trailer (haven't read the books). Especially agree about Gale Harold. It's like suddenly seeing a coiled cobra in the corner of your den. What the hell is something so dangerous (yet strangely beautiful and hypnotic) doing in any world you ever thought you'd be a part of? He'll steal any scene that isn't nailed down, and I'm not sure he won't steal some he isn't even in. A couple of times, when they cut away from him, I couldn't pay attention to the new people for a couple of seconds, and I perked right up every time he came back.
I love bad boy Gale. Can't wait!!
I agreed with your whole article and I can't wait to watch the show. I think Cassie (Robertson) and Adam (Thomas Dekker) are going to be amazing together I will be rooting for them the whole time I was from the moment I say this promo. I think Gale Harold and Phoebe Tonkin are going to be amazing as well. I am ready to tune in..
I cannot wait. I'm a huge Gale Harold fan - yep, give him good material so he can sink his teeth into and he WILL steal not only the scenes he is in but the whole show - and the show looks really great. It is just six minutes but we can definitely see chemistry not only between the actors playing Cassie and Adam but the whole group. And between the adults in the story also, nice little moment between Gale and Natasha.
This show has HUGE potential and I'm trusting Kevin Williamson and his team to provide us with a nuanced well written story with lots of fun and mystery. I'm not CW's demographic, but if they give me Gale Harold with all his talent and sex appeal and a great story on the screen, I'm in.
See you in September.
Love this! Looking forward to seeing the show this fall. Great looking cast, and some great talent on board. Big fan of Gale Harold, looks like a great role for him.
You are so right about Gale Harold! He is going to be an amazing bad guy--scary and threatening even while he's sexy as hell!
I'm looking forward to the SC in the Fall.
I love Gale Howard and this looks like a Great role for him.
Finally !
He can play bad so well.
Laurel, please, his name is Gale Harold!!
I can“t wait to see the show and how amazing can be Gale playing a role like this
I wondered why gale signed on with a new cw show. He must've known hellcats was being cancelled. I was just starting to like julian. He's a bad boy in this show. But, what if they don't renew this one. Or, it stays on and his character gets written out? People who watched vanished on fox, know about that. I wanted to watch vanished because gale would get to be the lead which,(a lot of people forget)he wasn't on queer as folk.
I also, thought vanished was going to turnout to be a good show. Was wrong about that one. I think he's good at being the bad boy too but, what's wrong with him playing a good guy. I'm only a fan gale like any other actor will decide to go whatever way in his career he thinks is best but, I kinda wish there would still be hellcats and julian parrish.
