'So You Think You Can Dance's' Mary Murphy: Kirstie Alley 'could never make it'

Mary Murphy, who returns to the judge's table on "So You Think You Can Dance" when the show launches on Thursday (May 26), admires Kirstie Alley's unlikely longevity, but says the "Dancing with the Stars" competitor probably wouldn't last long on the FOX dance competition show."They're two completely different things," said Murphy in a Tuesday interview. "Kirstie Alley could never, unfortunately make it, on 'So You Think You Can Dance.'"
Alley competes Tuesday (May 23) evening for the title on the "Dancing with the Stars" finale. As noted by our own Mikey O'Connell, Alley is unlikely to win, but made massive progress over the course of the season -- both in dancing and in weight loss. The demanding practice schedule helped Alley lose an undetermined amount of weight -- but enough that her costumes had to be taken in by several inches.
And Murphy recognizes Alley's accomplishments, but found the idea of Alley -- or any celebrity -- competing on "So You Think You Can Dance" laughable.
"She's done a great job on 'Dancing with the Stars,' but 'So You Think You Can Dance' is about people who are real professional dancers and they're extraordinary throughout the world in what they can do. The celebrities would never make it on 'So You Think You Can Dance'."
"So You Think You Can Dance" kicks off Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Mary's comments make perfect sense, the two shows represent completely different aspects of dance. The purpose of DWTS is for a celebrity to learn (and often look foolish) dancing, while SYTYCD is for professional (or at least formally trained) dancers to compete. Not really sure why any comment needed to be made...must just be to draw publicity for SYTYCD.

That's why it's called "Dancing with the Stars" and not called "Dancing with real professional dancers."
The whole thing with DWTS is seeing how the celebs improve week to week.
I always fast forward when Mary speaks or her annoying laugh on "you think you can dance" I hope they replace her, she is not good on show, great to be able to FF when she speaks!
