'So You Think You Can Dance' 'not choosing our all-stars until' Top 10 revealed

nigel-lythgoe-fox.jpg"So You Think You Can Dance" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe spoke to the press about the Season 8 premiere, which is right around the corner on Thursday (May 26). He says the all-stars are back, but they won't even be chosen until the show has a Top 10.

"Last year we didn't have a Top 20, we had a Top 10 and a lot of people said they didn't buy that. They wanted to see the connection between, we'll call them amateurs for the sake of the name, but the people who'd never been in the competition before," says Lythgoe, "My feeling was putting them with an all-star lifted their game immensely. It also lifted the choreographers because they had a real challenge there. What I wanted to try to do this year was please everybody. Do a Top 20, bring them down to a 10 and then introduce the all-stars."

"We are not choosing our all-stars until we see who is in the Top 10 and then again, like we're doing with the choreographers, being able to complement them," Lythgoe summarizes.

"We're going to have a revolving judge chair this season too," adds Lythgoe. "We're going to have a bit of fun with that. Adam Shankman is doing 'Rock of Ages' and he'll join us when he can, but we'll have a revolving judge chair ... we're very proud of him, we won't hold that against him. I've been working lately with a character called WIll.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, who is quite a good dancer. We'll use that revolving judge chair to work with members of the public who are in music, who are in theatre. We want to get that perspective."

"SYTYCD" premieres Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

love the show but the revolving chair should be for mary. she's horrid. nygel's obviously biased, so i look to the other dancing judges for real critique.

I'm already sorry to see AI end, but thankfully STYUCD will fill the void! I wish AI would also rotate judges. We shouldn't have to put up with judges that don't judge or are annoying, unqualified, or just plain boring.

I like that they're going to balance the All-Stars with pairings between the new kids. Hopefully this helps them get in some lighter choreography so there aren't as many injuries.

But- please no Will I Am. Please. One of the nice things about this show is that the guest judges are from the dance community. I'd really like them to keep with that. Or at least not have Will I Am.

ITA I'm sick of Will I Am. He has no business on the show as a judge.

I like what they're going to do this season. At least we can focus on the amateurs for the first half, then see if they can hang with the seasoned dancers the latter half.
