'Secret Diary of a Call Girl' series finale: Is she Belle or Hannah?

secret-diary-series-finale.jpg
For four seasons, British import "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" has shown off the glamorous side of high class prostitution, including lots of money, clothes and sex.

But as the series approached its long-planned end-date, it was clear that Hannah/Belle (Billie Piper) could not actually have it all. So they chose the finale as the first time to show how sad of a life it can really be.

Despite promising he could handle it, Ben (Iddo Goldberg) proved no different from the men who came before him. He gave Hannah the ultimatum of choosing between profession and being with him.

She spends most of the last episode considering the different paths. Clips from past encounters, a particularly eccentric party -- complete with a Scary Spice cameo -- for the newly sprung Stephanie (Cherie Lunghi) and the persistent cop Harry (Paul Nicholls) all seem to push her in different directions, but it's a naked run-in with a childhood schoolmate that settles her mind. Hookin' is who she is.

Hannah goes to meet Ben, as Belle, to tell him that she'll never be able to change or make him happy, letting him go in one of the most depressing, tear-soaked break-ups I've ever seen on TV.

And that's it.

She walks off, still sobbing, but assured in her decision, leaving behind the only person in her life who she ever really let in. It's tough to watch, but it is a fitting way to send off the character. She was never going to be someone's wife, with a 9-to-5 job. And pretending that she could ever be fulfilled by that would ultimately have been more depressing.

Not leaving us on a total sour note, the show did include a pretty fantastic blooper reel during the closing credits, reminding us that none of this was actually real -- and that filming sex scenes is totally awkward.

We'll miss you Belle. And you, too, Hannah.

Why couldnt she have just left with Doctor Who and go back to that alternate universe and live happily ever after !!! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT CAMEO BY DAVID TENNANT !!!

Sporteric, Rose Tyler is one of the worst Doctor companions of all time. I love Billie Piper but she needs to stay away from Who.

I loved the series and was one of my absolute faves of all time. I never thought Billie Piper was beautiful but the character she played was very attractive. The show dealt with the complications of love and relationships very well for the past 4 years. I will miss it.

The ending was tough and I could swear my eyes almost welled up but I would have enjoyed it more if she would have ended up with the Nice Guy instead of alone.

At the end of the day it was a sad series and knowing how it ended I probably would not recommend someone buy the DVD set. This ending kind of reminded me how Sam Malone of Cheers ended up alone and sad with him owning his bar again.

yeah, it was kind of depressing an did find myself becoming irritated with the way Belle was treating Ben---it never bothered me before this season---and I didn't understand the cop relationship---he seemed to appear out of nowhere.

Peter, if you think Rose Tyler was the worst companion, you obviously never saw Martha Jones...

Rose Tyler is iconic. And so is the 10th Doctor. :)

Rose Tyler evolved just like David Tennant's Doctor. Billie Piper was excellant in the role and also should have been nominated for this series for her acting ability.
Catherine Tate shines in anything she is in and I would love to see her become Steve Carrell's replacement on the Americanized version of the office. I hope they put out on DVD the play she and David Tennant will be performing together in England !!! They have great chemistry , with and without a script, as evidenced on the Graham Norton Effect talk show !!!

don't hate on martha :) it could be worse: remember mel? or tegan? or peri?

I loved this show. I can't believed it ended. I am glad they chose Billie Piper because she had a real woman's body. It was my guilty pleasure for the week. Oprah now this! What will I be watching? I hope the networks don't bombard us with fake reality shows. I will start investing in more books to read.

I wish they had gone on a season. I watched the first season when it aired, but then when I was away at school I couldn't watch because we didn't have Showtime. I literally just watched season 4 straight through. I suppose there wasn't much more they could do with Ben once they established a relationship, though.
