'Saturday Night Live': Kristen Wiig unceremoniously retires 'Gilly' and 'Penelope'
With so much of the heavy lifting falling to Kristen Wiig during her seven years on "Saturday Night Live," she has racked up a long list of recurring characters.
Some are received better than others. And as Vulture points out in Wiig's recent profile in Time, there are two you will never see again.
"Because her characters are simple," writes Time, "she's smart enough to retire them long before other 'SNL' cast members would. She'll no longer do Penelope the one-upper or Gilly the mischievous schoolgirl, not even at [Lorne] Michaels' request."
Whether you share her sentiment or not, Wiig is apparently over the sociopath with the fro -- who once spawned her own Christmas special -- and the world's worst brag.
We're inclined to admit that Gilly was well past her due date, but we still got the occasional snicker from Penelope. At least there's always the possibility of seeing more Judy "just kidding" Grimes, the deformed, squirrel-eating sister from "The Lawrence Welk Show" or the long-absentee Target Lady.
But for now, let us mourn the departed:

I agree that Gilly should be retired, she was never funny-just annoying. I do enjoy Penelope the one-upper and the Target lady. She can retire "just kidding" and the wierd looking Laurence Welk girl. She is very talented.
I'm sure the new person that does Miley will come up with something even more stupid.
The deformed sister from the Lawrence Welk Show is the only original SNL character I've found funny since the mid-'90s. Love it.

Ya, I agree Kristen is used WAY to much to fill the show. She is funny, but not that funny. For me, the funny one in the Gilly skits was Will Forte as the teacher always saying "Gilly". They tried it once or twice with other actors, but it was way less funny. I think that is the REAL reason SNL will not be doing Gilly skits anymore, and not because Wiig says so.
Wait, those were different characters? She just does the same annoying crap all the time.
If they don't do a Target skit when Justin Timberlake hosts the season finale, I'm gonna be SO pissed! They've already done two Target skits together and both were hilarious!
