'Saturday Night Live': Alums Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Darrell Hammond make with the funny

Tina Fey, why do you insist on returning to "Saturday Night Live" to lull us into a feeling of safety with your hilarity? We feel, somehow, that all is once again right with "SNL." But then you leave. Don't get us wrong. We're glad to have you in prime-time on "30 Rock" and we've definitely got that book on our reading list, but you and "SNL" just go together like rosé wine and roller coasters.

More on Tina later, but first to the opener which was extremely prescient considering the White House's release of Osama Bin Laden's home videos earlier in the day. Fred Armisen reprised his role as Osama Bin Laden and spent an inordinate amount of time on a joke that wasn't as funny as it probably was in the writing room: Bin Laden insisting that a 12-year-old virgin Dakota Fanning act as one of his pall bearers.

Moving right along, Tina Fey's monologue shifted the focus to Mother's Day. With her being six-months pregnant, and all, it was fitting. Maya Rudolph -- also preggo -- joined Fey to sing duets with their unborn fetuses.

And because we couldn't make it through the first 30 minutes of the show without Fey's signature Sarah Palin impression, that's what we got next. Another alum -- Darrell Hammond as Donald Trump -- joined in the faux Fox News "debate."



If you thought there's no way OBL would surface (no pun intended) in an under-the-sea skit, you were so wrong. Tina Fey as a mermaid and Kenan Thompson as a Jamaican lobster get a visit from Bin Laden's dead shrouded body.

Michael Bolton gives Andy Samberg an assist with his latest SNL Digital Short -- another hip-hoppy number that Bolton hilariously "ruins" with references to blockbuster movies. Product placement? Maybe. But it worked so we don't care.

Time for musical guest Ellie Goulding to sing her newest single "Lights." Not bad.

"Weekend Update" is mostly forgettable -- Jason Sudeikis makes an appearance as the Devil to talk about OBL. Then Armisen and Vanessa Bayer join the fun as -- ding ding ding-- OBL's childhood friends. Finally, Bill Hader steps in to make watching the news segment worth it with a report from New York club kid Stefan on what new hot clubs to take mom to for Mothers Day. And we're off to commercial.

Next up -- more OBL jokes? Not that this is getting old. But no -- we're getting into the last half hour of the show so it's time for Maya Rudolph to sport a mega-merkin, tongue Bill Hader's face and poke fun at natural childbirth.

We must be totally over the OBL stuff because we're on to a teen slumber party skit. The joke: There's a nerdy brainy chick who invites her MILF (calm down -- "Mother I'd Like to Friend").

Back to Goulding, who sends a big love letter to April 3 host Elton John with an amazing cover of "Your Song."

Finally, we're in the bizarro world that is the segments after the second music performance. Abby Elliott stars in a Bravo "reality" show called "Pregant in Heels." Think "Bethenny Gets Married" meets "The Rachel Zoe Project" with a hilarious turn by Jay Pharoah as the token gay friend.

Moving right along. Kenan Thompson is Googie Rene in "Googie Rene's Slightly Damaged Promwear Barn." All you need to know: "I'm totally down with this mada** tux, but what's up with all these browna** stains?"

The show closes with a fake Hallmark ad: The Hallmark "Mother" collection for weirdos. It must be 1 a.m.
