Patrick Dempsey leaving 'Grey's Anatomy': Will you watch without McDreamy?
Sad news, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. Patrick Dempsey has officially announced that he will exit the show after the upcoming season. He tells Vanity Fair, "It's going to be my last. I do not know what's going to happen to the other characters, but for me it's done."He's not leaving on bad terms, and he says the exit will be "bittersweet because it's been great and a great part of my life. But I can't see myself doing it anymore."
This doesn't come as much of a surprise, because Dempsey has made it clear in the past that he didn't want to play Derek Shepherd past his expiration date. This season, Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, and Chandra Wilson will all have reached the ends of their contracts, and could possibly all leave.
Luckily, executive producer Shonda Rimes is prepared for the mass exodus and tells TVLIne that she's approaching this season as if it will be the last for the remaining original cast members. We can be sure that everyone will get an appropriate exit... even if that means character death. "I feel like Meredith and Derek are meant to be together forever, and we're going to make sure that in the end they end up together, one would hope," she says. "Unless one of them dies or something."
Weigh in below in the comments section. Will you watch "Grey's" without McDreamy?

Unfortunately I feel that this show may have long since run it's course. It's a shame cause it is still a very good show with the best of the core actors still on board. It is technically an ensemble piece, but if you had to whittle it down to one or two Stars it would definitely be Ellen and Patrick, with Patrick every bit as integral to the show as Ellen. Even if only Patrick leaves the show, it will deal an absolutely devastating blow to the viewer-ship and to the shows story's. No one could ever even begin to fill his shoes, so introducing another actor would be a waste of time. I think Patrick wants to do more movies and I think he should strike while the iron is hot. Good luck to him.
I definitely won't watch. I feel like since after season 5, Grey's Anatomy has been slowly edging into a train wreck. I was an avid fan for so long but this past season seemed as if Shonda forgot her first couple. The only reason I watch is for the relationship between Meredith and Derek. So, if PD leaves, that's it for me. For me, there's no Grey's without my two favorites.
I haven't watched the show to date (except for the post-Super Bowl episode and the one after that, although I probably would've changed the channel earlier if the Steelers didn't win that night), what would make me start now?
I never watched for Patrick in the first place so McDreamy leaving is no biggie for me. Now if all the other originals bailed after this season then they should just end the show.
If you "haven't watched the show to date" then why even bother commenting? I'm just saying...
I will watch as long as Meredith is in it . I like derek but I like Meredith more.
I only started watching because if Derek and Meredith. I won't continue watching if the original core cast members abandon ship just like the cast of ER!
If Patrick OR Ellen OR BOTH Patrick and Ellen decide to leave Greys Anatomy after season 8 then ABC needs to step up and end the show! Fans will not watch Greys Anatomy without Meredith and Derek together on the show! The ratings this season were bad enough as it is when Shonda made the crazy decision to put MerDer and their storylines on the back burner for ridiculous, soap opera-like storylines with other characters. The show won't survive with them gone!
I won't even watch season 8 at all if Shonda Rhimes even THINKS about killing one of the characters off if Ellen or Patrick leave and the other one stays! I hope ABC stops her from doing this if she is thinking about it! I can live with the show and other characters continuing without Ellen and Patrick as long as MerDer get their "happily ever after" ending! MerDer fans have been loyal for years and deserve the happy ending payoff! However, best case scenario is that the whole show ends after season 8 and MerDer live happily ever after!
No. Never. No way. Anything after this season would strictly be an ego stroke to Shonda. Didn't she see the last season of Scrubs??
Personally, I think the show could be successful without either patrick or ellen. I think the character of Meredith has become weaker as a result of her stable relationship with Derek. To me Sandra Oh is the most exciting.
