Oprah's finale draws a huge audience

oprah-finale-ratings-320.jpgWe won't know the final numbers for a while, but we do know this: The final episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scored big ratings.

Preliminary metered-market ratings for Winfrey's last show on Wednesday (May 25) have the program at a 13.3 household rating. That's its best number since 1994 -- which was eight years into "The Oprah Winfrey Show's" 25-year run and before anyone had ever heard of Dr. Phil.

A final viewer count from Nielsen won't be available for a couple weeks, but the 13.3 rating should translate to somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 million viewers. That would make the "Oprah" finale one of the most-watched programs of this week regardless of where or when it aired; it's likely that only "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars" will rank higher.

The most recent final ratings for Winfrey's show come from the week of May 9-13, where it averaged a 5.4 rating among households and 7.35 million viewers (household ratings measure the percentage of homes whose TVs were tuned to a particular show, not the number of people in front of those TVs). If the household-to-viewer ratio is roughly the same for Wednesday's show as it was for that week, that works out to a shade over 18 million people.

Oprah's two-part "Farewell Spectacular" on Monday and Tuesday drew metered-market ratings of 10.2 and 10.7.

Like cancer, I'll wait 5 years AT LEAST before I believe she's gone.

Well all rating are really estimates, and regular day-time shows are generally not given priority.

Why do so many losers hate Oprah? If you don't like her you did not have to watch her show. Most people did like her because she was number 1 for 25 years.

What I don't like is the continual talk in the news media about "Who will replace Oprah?". They act like she was the only one on daytime. WHAT ABOUT Ellen DeGeneres?? Have they forgotten about her? I've always liked Ellen better than Oprah (both herself as a person and her show).

The answer is obvious... Ellen will take over the throne, she should be the new Queen of Daytime.

Actually Judge Judy has been #1 for the past few years. Haha lol purr sad thin! Noww off to yogurt.

For my part, I "hated" her because I consistently found her to be extremely manipulative and self-serving. Haven't watched for years but when I would occasionally roll across it, I would swear they were flashing audience-reaction control signs, e.g., "Sullen Looks All Around" whenever something arose about which "her highness" didn't approve.
