NBC cancels 'The Event,' 'Law & Order: LA,' orders 'Chelsea' and 3 more comedies

jason-ritter-the-event-320.jpgFriday the 13th turned out to be rather unlucky for a pair of low-rated NBC dramas: "The Event" and "Law & Order: LA" won't live to see another season.

On the other hand, several more comedy pilots got good news: "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Bent," "Free Agents" and "BFFs" all were picked up to series on Friday, Deadline reports.

As for the cancellations, neither one is a big surprise. "Law & Order: LA" merits a mild raise of the eyebrows only because of the "L&O" brand's long history at NBC, but it's not even the first one-and-done show in the franchise's history: "L&O: Trial by Jury" lasted only one season in 2005. Its ratings were nothing special either: Although it's averaging 8 million viewers for the season and a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, it's been well below that since its April 11 return/cast shuffle -- most episodes have hovered in the 5 million viewer range and been well below the 2.0 mark in the demo.

"The Event," meanwhile, has declined precipitiously since its big premiere in the fall. Its season numbers (7.3 million viewers, 2.4 demo) also don't really reflect the show's recent struggles. The past few episodes have drawn in the 4 million-viewer range. There is, however, apparently an effort under way to keep the show going elsewhere; Netflix has been mentioned as a possible outlet.

The flurry of comedy pickups -- the four ordered Friday join two other newcomers, "Up All Night" and "Whitney" -- looks like a pretty strong indication that NBC wants to try a second night of comedy next season. Here's a quick rundown of the four picked up Friday.

"Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" is based on Chelsea Handler's book; she also co-stars in the show, but not as herself: Laura Prepon ("That '70s Show," "How I Met Your Mother") plays Chelsea. Julie Ann Larson ("Dharma & Greg," "The Drew Carey Show" and Dottie Zicklin are its creators.

"Bent" is a rom-com about a Type-A single mom (Amanda Peet) who finds herself falling for the laid-back contractor (David Walton of "Perfect Couples") who's remodeling her house. Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development") plays Walton's dad; "Scrubs" veteran Tad Quill created it.

"BFFs" stars Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham (who also created it) as, you guessed it, best friends. Their relationship is complicated somewhat by the fact that one of them now lives with her boyfriend.

"Free Agents" is based on a Britcom of the same name about two newly single co-workers (Kathryn Hahn and Hank Azaria) who may or may not be just right for each other. Anthony Head ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") is their boss, a role he also played in the British show. "Party Down's" John Enbom adapted it.

Those new shows sound like they're all going to be one and done...if they even make it one.

As to Law & Order: Los Angeles having markedly lower ratings after the relaunch, well, it's amazing how you can lose viewers after you show eight episodes and then take the show off the air for six months. Oh, and then you kill off the best actor on the show and make several others just disappear. **** Wolf has/had a "no pilot" deal with NBC, where he can create a show in his mind and they basically have to put it on the air. Thing is, there's a reason for pilots. Often times they'll film one and the network will pick it up, but they'll want to make a lot of cast & content changes and the pilot will never be aired. Wolf's not doing himself any favors by skipping the pilot process, as his last three attempts at a new show were canceled in the first season.

Having said that, I liked L&O:LA, even after the cast changes. It was an interesting reboot of the L&O franchise. It's really too bad that Wolf let NBC cancel the original in order to get this failed series on the air.

I would rather get another season (or half-season) of The Event that this batch of new shows. None of them, except Free Agents (only due to its cast), sound even remotely interesting. Give me a twists-and-turns sci-fi drama over laugh-track comedies anyday.

Im really ticked about Law and Order LA !!!!!!!!!!!!

The mistake NBC made with the Event was giving it the winter break. It had momentum going, and then it was gone. Other shows had suffered the same fate.

Really liked LOLA...liked the current cast...anything Chelsea Handler touches will be trashy...where is NBC going with this?

**** Wolf needs to switch network affiliations. L&O: LA was a good show that NBC screwed around with and killed. I'm not talking about the cast changes; I'm talking about the ridiculous scheduling hiatus. When has that ever happened and a show has gone on to succeed?

Having said that, Chas has a point. Wolf may not be doing himself any favors with his "no pilot" deal.

This is good news for Chuck! With this wretched line-up, it's that much more likely that Chuck will get more than 13 new episodes next season.

Expect Chuck to last one more season with these episodes and it's done. L&O LA was just milking the L&O franchise and the Event was just awful viewing. Also noted that Outsourced got its walking papers today. Bad concept of a show that never should have gone to air to begin with. Glad that won't see another season.

No, **** wolf was expecting to finish the original l&O last and 21st season, but then there was a suprise cancellation, so there was a rush to get it to the air. although, maybe he could have waited till spring IDK. Anyway, the first 8 were not great, but then the reboot ones have been very great. Writing/directing is better and the cast is better. Wish it couldve stayed on
