Kevin Costner does 'Hatfields and McCoys' for History; FOX, FX developing separate pirate series

On the heels of its Bible project with Mark Burnett, the History Channel has also a miniseries on the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud of the late 1800s. Kevin Costner will star as Devil Anse Hatfield and also co-produce the miniseries, which is slated to air next year. [History Channel]

FOX is taking to the high seas. The network is in negotiations for a limited series called "Pyrates" from producers Ridley and Tony Scott and writer Barry Schindel ("Law & Order"). The story, about the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628, is being targeted as a limited-run series, possibly for summer 2012. [Deadline]

Speaking of pirates: FOX's cable sibling FX is teaming up with "The Walking Dead" producer Gale Ann Hurd and GK-tv ("Camelot") for a drama project called "Port Royal." It's set in the late 1600s in "richest and wickedest city" in the Americas -- Port Royal, Jamaica, a haven for privateers. [GK-tv]

HBO has greenlit an unscripted series called "On Freddie Roach," which will follow the renowned boxing trainer as he works with fighters, greets celebrities at his Hollywood gym and fights against the effects of Parkinson's disease, which may well have stemmed from his own time in the ring. Peter Berg ("Friday Night Lights") is executive producing. [HBO]
