'Grey's Anatomy' finale: Meredith's not alone and other gray matters

The "Grey's Anatomy" finale explored a very interesting question, though one that we haven't already asked ourselves a hundred times in a hundred different ways on this series. Is everything black and white?
In Thursday's (May 19) episode, Meredith found out her penance for switching Adele's placebo for the real thing in Derek's Alzheimer's clinical trial. Meanwhile, the hospital prepares itself to treat the passengers of a plane crash, but find that only one young girl survives. And the other doctors are forced to define their romantic relationships in whole new ways.
Meredith and Derek: When the chief discovers that it was Adele that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was protecting, he decides to suspend her instead of fire her. But to Derek (Patrick Dempsey), there's just no getting past what he believes is Meredith's inability to see right and wrong. While he fixates on her bad judgment, Meredith takes on the responsibility of their new adopted child all by herself for the first night.
Christina and Owen: When she finds out that she's pregnant, Christina (Sandra Oh) decides she won't keep the baby. Owen (Kevin McKidd), on the other hand, tries to convince her that she needs to open herself up to the idea. So when she goes forward on making an appointment for an abortion, Owen hits the roof. He claims that the issue isn't whether she keeps the baby or not (though, how could that be true?), but more about not being part of the decision process.

Clearing up the gray: Teddy (Kim Raver), Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) all take steps to clearly define their romantic relationships in new ways. Teddy decides that she's indeed falling in love with Henry (Scott Foley). Finally! Bailey moves beyond the mainly sexual relationship she's having with the hot male nurse when she decides to let him meet her son. And Lexie finally tells Mark (Eric Dane) that he can't just give her over to Avery with his words, but he needs to stay away from them as well. She doesn't trust herself with any of the in-between.
Chief resident: By default, the position goes to Kepner (Sarah Drew). While Alex (Justin Chambers) may have had good reason to rat Meredith out, it backfired on him. Owen points out that by doing what he did, he had lost the respect of the other doctors. So, how could he be an effective chief resident if no one will listen to him?
If creator Shonda Rhimes wanted us to examine the question of whether there exists a definite right and wrong, then she accomplished that task and then some.
Now, the question is where do you fall on the gray matters?

WOW - I loved this episode mainly because Cristina is pregnant!!! OMG I understand that she didn't want to be a mother but that is not the issue anymore she is. It is not the same as not wanting to try. I am prochoice but in this situation when she has a loving supportive husband an abortion is horrible. I understand both sides but Owen was right at the end, she didn't even give him a say in the decision, it is not just her decision when she is married. I am sad how it ended but Owen needed to stand up to her and let her know that he is totally in this marriage and he needs her to be to and work together to make the decision. I loved that Owen was willing to do whatever it took because he loves her and their baby. I will so be done with this show if Shonda has her abort this baby, where would the growth be in that??? I think it is interesting that Cristina is afraid that she would love the baby because I think that is where the real problem lies why she doesn't want to be a mother like it links to her father dying and her mother issues. I hope we see Cristina grow from this life changing experience and not regress.
Just b/c Christina is preggers doesn't make her a mother! While I agree that Owen should be involved in the decision making with regard to abortion, ultimately, it is Christina's right to choose. Not every woman is meant to be a mother, nor is motherhood fulfilling for every woman who faces such a decision. I think it a bold choice storywise for the show to address this issue! Personally, I like the idea of some woman making the choice to remain childless. Kids aren't the be-all and end-all for all women. I look forward to seeing how the story evolves.
I agree with Val that just because you get pregnant doesn't make you a mother. That's like saying that just because you visit Spain, you're suddenly Spanish. However, Cristina is married so it SHOULD be Owen's decision to make with her as to whether or not she has an abortion. Would it be her decision to make with him if he wanted to take a job in another state? What about if he wanted them to up and move to another country? If he wanted to stop working? Yes, these are all decisions that a woman would expect a man to consult them about, and whether or not to go forward with the pregnancy is definitely something she should confer with him about as well.
With that being said, I think Owen should not force a child on Cristina. She has never wanted one, and I think she would make a crappy parent personally. Some people are made for it and some aren't. My best friend likes my kids but she'd rather die (literally) than have any of her own. It isn't appealing to her in any sense and that's her CHOICE. To say someone has to have a baby is idiotic. No one should be forced to bring another life into this world and care for them for the next 18+ years if they're incapable, or unwilling. I'm sorry, but that's wrong to the "parent" as well as the child!
Abortion early on is no different than birth control. Period. I don't consider a zygote a baby, regardless of what Fundamentalists say.
Pro-choice...You use that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means. "Horrible" is having a baby you don't want just to pacify your spouse or because your birth control failed. Yuck. Babies deserve to be born to parents who love them and want them desperately in spite of all the work and worry they bring. And marriage is about more than having babies.
Cristina has always been clear about the fact that she does not want children. Not everyone feels a biological imperative to reproduce and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
So complex and so interesting. Regardless of your stance on the various issues presented, I commend the show for being realistic.
Derek is a tool and he thinks Meredith doesn't know right from wrong...wow..what a joke. I still hate the Kepner character and I can't believe that anyone would approve her role as Chief resident after she killed that woman last season. The show seems intent on making Alex easy to hate but I do love Owen's reaction to Yang's lack of respect for their marriage.
In this day and age, educated doctors getting pregnant when they don't want children. What hope for teenagers if Owen and Christina can't prevent a pregnancy.
Owen couldn't stop talking about what HE wanted, and never took the time to try to understand Christina. He wanted to play a part in the decision making, but he was pretty clear on the fact that his idea only was the good one. As if forcing a woman to become a mother would be a great thing for a child! I don't get what Christina is doing with a selfich prick that is trying to control her like that. He completely disregarded her opinion and feelings. Anyway...
The episode managed to do very well to put the table for next season, while being very different from last year' finale.
How did Christina get pregnant? She's a doctor, she would be careful about using protection and birth control.
I wonder if Owen sabotaged it somehow that she would get pregnant.
The fact that Meredith tampered with the trial is born of the quality in her that will make her a BRILLIANT mother. A mother would do ANYTHING for her child. There are no limits, family comes first, and that is exactly how Meridith lives. She is loyal and courageous and strong and Derek is an idiot for not recognizing that a woman who would risk her career for family is a woman who will put her all into her family.
*I do understand Adele is not blood related, but in the backdrop of this show, the chief and Adele are her family, more so perhaps than her father.
As far as Christina is concerned, I wondered HOW could she make Owen a part of the decision? He only wanted a yes, and you can't have half a baby, it is all or nothing. I think their difference here was irreconcilable, and Owen can't brow beat her into it. That would be extremely damaging to her, as she pointed out. That said, if she thinks she would love the baby, she probably would make an excellent mother, because she is practical and determined and defends the ones she loves with her all.
