'Grey's Anatomy': 5 reasons why Alex Karev did the right thing

The race for chief resident heated up on "Grey's Anatomy" as the field of candidates went down to just two and may have driven Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) to play dirty.

It was a process of elimination for the position as the episode rolled on. Avery (Jesse Williams) pulled himself from the diabetes trial and by doing so, out of the running for chief resident, as well. By going over Teddy's (Kim Raver) head, Yang (Sandra Oh) proved that her passion was in surgery and would probably die on the vine as chief resident. And while Kepner (Sarah Drew) had the rules down, she lacks the forcefulness to enforce them.

That leaves Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Karev for the position. But, Karev had a tough week and then his new girlfriend (and ruthless witch) snatched away his option of taking a job with the African kids. So, when faced with the possibility that he may lose the chief resident position to Meredith, he ratted Meredith's tampering with the Alzheimer's study to Owen (Kevin McKidd).

We know your first thought was probably "Bastardo!" But, we think he did the right thing (recently crossed by the hot doctor and possibly drunk considered).

Hear us out! We have five good reasons:

1.) This is business, not personal.

2.) Meredith took it upon herself to decide between one patient's life over another. And she had no right.

3.) Derek deserves to know that his trial was in jeopardy and she wasn't going to tell him.

4.) By doing what she did, Meredith proved she wasn't the right person for the chief resident job and she really brought all this upon herself.

5.) If Karev didn't say anything, then he's as guilty as Meredith is.

Do you disagree? Should Karev have kept his mouth shut?

I think he should have kept his mouth shut! He only ratted Meredith out for selfish reasons and he may cost her her career and Derek's trial and, therefore, the possible cure for Alzheimer's to the world. Meredith tampered with the study to try to help Adele, not for her own benefit like Karev...Sure, Karev might have his "awww" moments but, in general, he's just a selfish immature jerk who does not deserve to be Chief Resident...

How isn't Meredith selfish for wanting a certain patient to get the active agent instead of another? What Meredith did was purely because it's what SHE WANTED and not what was best or fair for anyone else. She was essentially playing God and the rightful patient got the placebo instead. Meredith tampering with the clinical trial puts Derek's credibility at risk and the hospital as a research institute. Derek has a right to know his clinical trial has been tampered with and that Meredith has been lying to him, scheming behind his back and is the wrong person to be on this Alzheimer's trial because she can't separate her personal feelings from being a professional. Meredith is completely to blame for the situation she is in and the situation she has put Derek, the clinical trial patient and the hospital in.

Perhaps what he did was right but the way he did it -- drunk and vengeful in a bar -- was not.

As much as I know what Mere did was wrong, I still believe Alex should have kept his mouth shut. It wasn't his place to say anything.

I think meredith really went overboard with this stunt. It goes completely against all medical ethics and certainly makes her character very questionable. Besides, this is just a clinical trial meaning there is no guarantee at all that it will work, so why the hell did she go to such lengths??? There is no known cure for alzheimer's disease and the characters in the show should just accept that for a fact

I agree!I love
Alex!

Everyone keeps forgetting this wasn't merely Merridith trying to help out someone she knows. Merridith feels guilt about her mother and the chiefs affair. And if you'll remember the scene before Mer did the switch, adelle was having an episode and confused Mer with her mother. So yeah, Mer was confused and guilty and made a bad snap judgement. HOWEVER, even though she did broke the rules, it really doesn't change the study. Yes, someone else that might have gotten the drug will now get the placebo. But this is medicine and science and man made the rules about the placebo vs. real drug random treatment. So who's to say Mer is moraly wrong to begin with.

While Grey was morally wrong, her action changes nothing for the study. That study could make a big change in the live of Alzheimer patients and their family.

Karev, in the other hand, only opened his mouth about it because: a) Meredith had better chances to be chief resident than him (Alex is basically in the race because he is lucky a rich patient he had no right asking money to, gave him the sums needed nonetheless. Talk about ethic!) b) he was frustrated for being dumped.

I must add: I don't get the "ruthless witch" comment about Lucy. When she talked to him about her Texas offer, he didn't seem to care that she would leave. Later, when he considered the African project, it didn't seem to bother him that he would leave her. In fact, the idea that she existed only popped up because of Arizona's question to him. If Karev didn't care enough for Lucy, why would she let the opportunity pass for nothing? HE was the "witch", not her.

Alex has done basically everything right and keeps getting crapped on and meredith cheated for good reason but none the less cheated the trial and was most likely gonna get the promotion over him even though he has been the most consistent surgeon there

Meredith DEFINES selfish. In general.
