Christopher Meloni leaves 'SVU' -- so who should take his place?

meloni-svu-replacements.jpgThe news that Christopher Meloni won't return to "Law & Order: SVU" next season blindsided fans of the long-running series. The question now is: Who fills Elliot Stabler's shoes?

NBC and "SVU's" producers are reportedly searching for a "big name" to take over for Meloni, who's been with the show since its debut in 1999. In addition to being well-known, though, the guy (and we're assuming it will be a guy, so as to preserve the male-female dynamic between the lead detectives) who takes over for Meloni will need to have chemistry with co-star Mariska Hargitay and, if not match the intensity Meloni brought to Stabler, at least command attention in a similar way.

We don't know if any of the six actors below are "big" enough for NBC, but we think they'd all do fine work on "SVU."

John C. McGinley: He's known more as a comedic actor thanks to "Scrubs," but he can do tightly wound and dramatic just as well as tightly wound and hilarious. (He's also a pal of Meloni's, for what that's worth.) If the show is looking for a character in the Stabler mold, he'd be an excellent choice.

Dean Winters: The former "Rescue Me" star and on-and-off Liz Lemon boyfriend has actually been an "SVU" regular in the past. He was written off midway through Season 1 with the explanation with his young detective wasn't up to handling the rigors of the Special Victims Unit (he also had a one-night stand with Hargitay's Olivia Benson). More than a decade later, he's presumably a much tougher detective -- maybe a transfer back into SVU is in order?

Dominic West: The cameo by Richard Belzer in Season 5 of "The Wire" continued his streak of playing John Munch on a record number of shows but also establishing that "SVU" and "The Wire" exist in the same universe. We don't think West should reprise Jimmy McNulty on "SVU," but we do think there would be fantastic sparks between him and Hargitay.

Seth Gilliam: On the other hand, we'd be perfectly happy if Gilliam could bring his "Wire" character, Ellis Carver, back to life in the "Law & Order" universe. Carver was the epitome of what that show called "good police." (He's also an "L&O" veteran, having guested on several episodes of the original show, "Criminal Intent" and "Trial by Jury.")

Donal Logue: He'd be a slightly outside-the-box choice, but Logue is an excellent actor. We'd love to see how he'd handle interaction with his fellow detectives (particularly Belzer as Munch), victims and suspects.

Boris Kodjoe: The "Undercovers" star has typically played more suave characters, but he could handle the grittier world of "SVU" as well. At 38, he's also somewhat younger than the current regulars, which could bring a different shade to the relationship between the two lead detectives. The older-younger dynamic worked well for many years on the "L&O" mothership, and it would be worth a try here as well.

Who would you cast to replace Meloni on "SVU"?

Boris Kodjoe - YES!

I like Henry Simmons who use to be in NYPB Blue, but since I see he's in Man UP, This may not be possible. By Boris Kodjoe would be good substitute.

I like your suggestion of Donal Logue--I've liked him since his ER days.

A way-out suggestion: Arnold Schwarzenneger.

Michael Chikliss, from No Ordinary Family and The Shield. It's so obvious

I still hope that Meloni and Universal Media Studios can reach a new deal in time, Stabler is one of my favorite parts of the show.

If they can't reach a contract agreement, I really hope he makes some quest appearances and I really hope the bring back Elliot for the series finale when that comes and does the final case with the usual suspects aka Cragen, Munch, Benson, Tutuola, Huang and Warner. It just won't be right if he doesn't. I'm not sure I can to into the finale if he isn't there. Maybe even bring back Cabot or Novak for the ending. I'm majorly bummed they couldn't work something out. SVU isn't SVU without Stabler...

What about Michael Imperiolli? Just have him stay as the same character he was on detroit 187 and he now has moved back to New York. It worked for munch switching shows with the same character

Chemistry with Hargitay is probably of less importance since she has been very open about wanting to cut back her involvement with the show in the coming season to spend more time with her growing family.

Absolutely no to Boris Kodjoe! Where did you get that he's a big name/star? Dude acting resume is not impressive at all nor is his acting.

I think they should forget about replacing the detectives and give more time to the lawyers. Doing so would mean they don't have to replace Chris, and also that Mariska would have to work less hours. The past few seasons have been lacking on the "law" side, due to the revolving door or ADAs.

My ideal lineup (opening credits):
Mariska Hargitay
Ice-T
Dann Florek
Linus Roache
Diane Neal
and Sam Waterston

Much of this is wishful thinking, I imagine, and who knows if it could happen, but presumably Jack worked nearly as closely as DA with Special Victims as he would have with Homicide. So the only transfer would be Cutter, which could be interesting since he is not always the most empathetic, and he would have to learn how to be more sensitive to the victims. Casey, being experienced in Special Victims, could sort of force him to be more sensitive, while of course getting situated back in the DA's office. I also think they would have a good rapport (platonic of course, not UST like Mike/Connie). They share an interest in baseball, anyway.

Everyone wants to see more of Fin, so why not just have him and Olivia be partners? They always work well together, and they have a good commeraderie. Presumably, they can't have any more of Belzer, so I think they should just credit him as a special guest star when they can get him. Same with BD Wong and Tamara Tunie. They are hardly there any more. They should credit them as SGSs.

Again, this is ideological thinking :P But I think returning to a format of half cops/half lawyers would be the best way to revamp the show, rather than replacing Stabler/promoting Benson. They don't need four detectives. The original always worked fine with two. Then they could bring back some good courtroom drama too.

Okay, I think that's it lol. Either way, I will miss Chris a lot :'(
