'Being Erica': Brandon Jay McLaren dishes on Lenin in Season 4

"Being Erica" is a bittersweet topic for American fans of the Canadian series.

Sweet, because the show has been renewed and is currently shooting Season 4. Bitter, because Disney's planned shut down of SOAPnet leaves the series without an American home next year. We can only hope someone smartens up and picks up the series for American fans.

Thankfully, we just learned something that tips us back into the sweet area when we spoke to Brandon Jay McLaren recently about his role as Bennett Ahmed on the AMC show, "The Killing."

"I just started shooting Season 4 of 'Being Erica' this week," McLaren tells Zap2it. "I always considered my character to be a one season kind of thing. When I heard about the pickup, I didn't assume I was going to be included in that. Then, I got the call that they wanted to bring the character back, which was great."

McLaren plays Lenin, Erica's sister Sam's (Joanna Douglas) new boyfriend and upgrade after her divorce. So even though he was only on his first week back on the job, we grilled him for whatever deets he could tell us about next season.

What can we expect from Lenin and Sam's relationship next season?
There are some big changes for Sam and my relationship coming up. Different things will be added in to our relationship, as well. I'm excited to be back again.

Lenin is a free spirit and Sam is pretty much the opposite. Does that become more of a problem for them or does the difference bring them closer together?
I think it's both, because my character just continues to challenge her and kind of her beliefs like no one has probably done in her life. It's a point of contention, but it's also something that brings us together.

What are your hopes for your character in Season 4?
I hope that maybe you get to see more of who he is aside from his job, sort of where he comes from and a little more back-story. That'd be nice.

Do you identify with Lenin's ability to see his career as a means to an end rather than the thing that defines him? Or is he totally unlike you?
Yeah, it is a bit unlike me. I mean yes and no. In many ways, it is kind of like me. Most people don't become an actor, because you think it's going to make you rich. You got to do it, because you love it and you take a chance. Lenin likes his lifestyle, so he doesn't work to become rich. He works to sort of lead the life that he enjoys. So, I guess there are some similarities in that aspect.

Are you glad to hear McLaren's back on "Being Erica" for Season 4?

Being Erica is filmed in Toronto not Vancouver.

Fantastic! Glad he is coming back. And am so very happy that there is a Season 4!!! How about Lifetime or USA to show Being Erica so I can watch ASAP!

Will epidodes air on the Internet? On You Tube? If so where? This is one of my favorite shows and I do not want to miss it. What is the date of the first show of the season?

Hulu has seasons 1 to 3 of Being Erica. Season 3 episodes were available on Hulu the day after they aired. They will probably have Season 4...

Love the show, but would love to see Ethan come back and win Erica back. They were good together and it irritated me that she mooned over him for so long and then dumped him when things weren't going her way. It was a stupid move.

One of the best cmedy series on television. It's crazy that it shuold be struggling to find a channel in the US to pick it up. It goes to show how many idiots there are running Television networks.

Hooray - thanks for the great news, Lenin is terrific! The only other bit of information I'm reallyreally hoping to hear is that Kai will be back as well. What a dream boat. It was annoying that Erica pined for Ethan for so long and then the relationship fizzled so fast. But I like Kai much better and wish there could be a way for them to be together.

I may have to plan some trips to Canada in the fall if I can't stand to wait till January for hulu or perhaps another network (Lifetime or WE would be a good fit) to pick it up.

Great news. I actually got a casting notice from them. Of course, so did probably 10,000 other Toronto actors who love the show. I DO know one of the stars personally---like that'll do any good.
And I absolutely disagree with Polly. It is hardly a comedy. It is part drama, part scifi, part fantasy, and part none of the above but very well written---the Canadian Chuck, if you will.

Chris? Nowhere in the article does it say Vancouver.

Ethan - ugh. I did not enjoy their relationship one bit. He always seemed to be trying to hold Erica back from being who she is. She's a risk-taker and he's not, but does that mean he should impose his will on her? I enjoyed Kai way more and hope he returns for a bit of a longer stint. And I love Lenin and would love to see him see loosen the stick in Sam's b*m.

And my poor American friends!!! I so hope you get to see it 'cuz that's probably half the reason why it gets renewed in Canada! :s

I agree, Ethan was terrible! But I also don't really see Erica with the Irish guy... I'm excited for season 4 and I live close enough to Canada that I get the CBC on cable! If only I had health insurance too...
