'American Idol's' Randy Jackson: 'The Voice' is 'gimmicky'
Watch out -- there's about to be a reality singing competition fight! It all started when Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, one of the vocal coaches on NBC's "The Voice," said, "The people that we're not turning our chairs around for could win "American Idol." Basically, he was implying that the lowest level of talent on their show could be the best on FOX's hit show. Those sure are fighting words, Mr. Levine.
Now, "Idol" judge Randy Jackson has reacted to Levine's remark in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a great thing when talent can be simple, honest and revered as opposed to spinning around with gimmicky chairs," he says. "Maybe Simon Cowell should have people opening doors. Like, 'Knock, knock; Who's singing? I can't see you!' Point to Jackson/ Team "Idol"!
Obviously, Jackson was joking (for the most part), but does make a good point about "Idol" paving the way for shows like "The Voice." "Look, none of these other shows could exist without somebody forging the path before them. I'm happy to say that 'Idol' that that and paved the way."
While we agree with Levine that there has been some pretty amazing talent featured on "The Voice" so far, we think it's a little early to be calling out "Idol." It's been on for ten years. Clearly they're doing something right.
Which side are you on, Zappers? Team "Idol" or Team "Voice"? Make your case in the comments.

the voice is a great show and Adam Levine is correct, because people get chosen to be on the voice because there all great singers, so even when judges don't turn there chair around, that person could still make it big on american idol, and on the voice the coaches actually mentor the people to make them better performers.
I am liking the Voice more than Idol right now, maybe in part because it is fresh and Idol is running its course. Erin is right, and her point was demonstrated beautifully with that one girl who the judges didn't push the button for...twice. I really felt sorry for her but can't help but think that this is why the "chair turned around" thing is so brilliant. The first time she auditioned, when they turned around, Cee Lo especially but also Adam were like, "Oh no! You're so pretty! Can I push my button now?" Then they bring her back for the second chance, and STILL don't push their buttons and STILL act all upset when they see her again. If the judges had seen these singers all along, that girl would have taken someone else's spot because they thought she was pretty. Her voice is what matters - I'm not *watching* the radio when these people put out music, I am *listening* to it.
For this reason, the Voice's approach to auditions is not a gimmick, it's effective.
The way I see it, Adam was being respectful of "Idol." Randy shouldn't have said that. Instead, he could have gracefully bowed out with a simple and curtious response. If he is a professional he better act like it.
American Idol didn't pave the way. Pop Idol did, in the UK. American Idol is a copy of that show. Get over yourself Jackson and give the real ground breaker some credit. Your lot didn't create anything. Anyway, Idol has been around for ages & it's rusty. It's a shadow of it's glory days and needs to be shelved. Time for some new blood.
If your gonna have an Idol exit poll you MUST continue it week to week. Where is the exit poll for WEEK 9?
randy's tripping. voice is amazing, and their voices could whip most of the idol top 12, and yes, i watch both shows. fast forwarding through the 'oh my god how did they get through.' haven't fast forwarded through voice one. on the other hand, idol ...
I was surprised to admit I REALLY liked the Voice! I've been a loyal Idol fan for every season in spite of all the flaws, and I still plan to keep watching. Maybe I just really enjoy getting a chance to see new potential stars getting exposure. I admit I'm a music addict with a style for every mood. Maybe eventually we will get over saturated with this type of show, but as long as we can choose (and vote) I've got room (and thanks to DVR) time to watch more than one. I also love SYTYCD, and like how they plan for one series to end and another begin. If they would do that with the music type shows we wouldn't have such a long dry spell waiting for Idol to come back in January. I hope the Voice keeps growing and sticks around for more than one season. I'll tune in!
When are you going to update the Exit Poll for Week 9 results?
