ABC shortens 'Good Christian Belles' to 'G.C.B.'

gcb-new-title-320.jpgThe new ABC series known heretofore as "Good Christian Belles" is now on its third title, the much shorter "G.C.B."

That's the word from Variety, which says the network is going to use the initials-only name that has been stamped across the cross-wearing, cleavage-bearing model in promotional materials for the show. (For what it's worth, the network's website and press portal still had "Good Christian Belles" as the title at the time of this post.)

The show, which stars Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor and David James Elliott, was originally titled "Good Christian B***hes" after the novel on which it's based. Not many people figured that would end up being the title of the show, but it didn't stop some conservative activists from bashing the project before it even shot a pilot.

Upon its pickup, the title was changed to "Good Christian Belles," which caused some griping from people who liked the original name. "G.C.B." doesn't really convey much about the show, but we suppose you'll be able to decide for yourself what the "B" means.

ABC will debut "G.C.B." at midseason. There's no specific spot for it yet, but if we had to guess we'd bet it gets a run following "Desperate Housewives" on Sunday nights.

So basically this isn't news...

The problem isn't the name; it's the underlying premise that Christians are somehow more hypocritical than others. If the show's creator decided to make the show about Jewish hypocrisy, for example, how would that go over? It wouldn't. The introduction of religion into the premise of the show is unfortunate and makes it a non-starter.

Already going to apologize for this but those of us who aren't as religious as some DO find some Christians hypocritical. But so as to not turn this into an argument I thought the original title was great. It was sarcastic and was a double entendre. Some Christians can be sweet tempered but also be very mean. I think that is what the title was supposed to show. But leave it to America to try and not offend people by diluting the message. Not expecting those who are easily offended to understand that of course.

I agree Linda. Basically, the evangelical movement in this country has decided it wants a special platform. It has obtained that. However, by obtaining that the movement has to take the slings and arrows that will be inevitably thrown at it. You can't demand to be heard and then whine when someone doesn't agree. There are Christians and then there are the evangelical fundamentalist counterparts, but I'm pretty sure this show addresses the hypocrisy among the latter rather than the former. I just imagine "Good Evangelical Fundie B*tches" was bit much for a title. :-)

Kristen Chnoweth !

They keep changing it because the christian community isn't going tolerate it. Everybody knows they're fakes in the church like these women in the show. But the fact is is non-christians are too stupid to realize that these women don't reflect ALL Christian women.
It'll have negative backfire on true Good christian women who DON'T go to church to be Social gossip butterflies. This show will not survive!

I'm sick of this station and ALL their ungodly shows...desperate housewives / greys anatomy / modern family...and now this immoral filth.

It is so mindboggling to me how we have to be so very careful not to offend Muslims, but we can constantly attack Christianity by things just like this. It is true: there are hypocrites in churches, but there are hypocrites everywhere. Overall, this does more to destroy the effectiveness of the Word of God by telling people that "Christian Women" are hypocrites and senseless human beings. The sad thing is: God did not create women to be viewed as senseless, stupid, sexual toys. This show is so demoralizing and devastating to women everywhere. I would hate to be the one who created this show, and standing before God trying to explain why I did it.

Bash the Christians but do not touch any other group. There is hypocracy everywhere. Why not call the show Bad Lib eral Ath ei sts? Perhaps solar energy R US?
