'Today' show needs an anchor, because Matt Lauer may be jumping ship

If NBC seemed chilly about Tuesday's (April 5) reports that Meredith Vieira is contemplating vacating her "Today" show anchor chair, then it really sounds miffed now that sources are saying Matt Lauer has his hand on the exit door, as well.

According to ET's source, Lauer has already informed his network bosses that he plans to leave the show when his contract is up on December 31.

In response, NBC released the following statement:

"There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it's not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and 'Today.'"

Wow, in statement language, they're steaming over there!

This report joins other recent reports that Lauer's former co-anchor, Katie Couric, is leaving her CBS gig for her own talk show.

Could Lauer be mulling over greener pastures?
