Steven Tyler's Nat King Cole gibberish: 'Ke-Mo Ki-Mo (The Magic Song)'
During Wednesday night's (April 13) "American Idol," Casey Abrams performed Nat King Cole's version of "Nature Boy" from the 1948 movie "The Boy With Green Hair." Once he was done, judge Steven Tyler gave a very strange (even for Steven) praise of Casey, saying that Nat King Cole was the guy who sang, "Ke-mo, ki-mo spare-o-spare, Ma-hi, ma-ho, ma-rump-sticka-pumpernickle, soup-bang, nip-cat, polly-mitcha-cameo."
So what was that crazy nonsense?
Well, it was actually a surprising bit of music trivia coming from Steven Tyler. It's a song called "Ke-Mo Ki-Mo (The Magic Song)," which is featured on "King Cole for Kids," a 1951 LP that had other classics like "Old McDonald Had a Farm" and "Three Blind Mice."
The lyrics and audio are below. Props to Steven Tyler for knowing that song, honestly. And there's your answer, wondering "Idol" viewers.
Ke-mo, ki-mo spare-o-spare
Ma-hi, ma-ho, ma-rump-sticka-pumpernickle
Soup-bang, nip-cat, polly-mitcha-cameo
I love you.
Ke-mo, ki-mo spare-o-spare
Ma-hi, ma-ho, ma-rump-sticka-pumpernickle
Soup-bang, nip-cat, polly-mitcha-cameo
I love you.
Once a great magician taught me what to say,
So now I'll use these magic words
To steal your heart away.
Ke-mo, ki-mo spare-o-spare
Ma-hi, ma-ho, ma-rump-sticka-pumpernickle
Soup-bang, nip-cat, polly-mitcha-cameo
I love you.

I thought it was pretty clear that he wasn't speaking utter nonsense that time (even though I had never heard of the song), because JLo was enthusiastically agreeing with him (as if she actually understood what he was saying), instead of her usual smiling bewilderment.
This reference that Steven Tyler made the other night on Idol actually surprised me. My father, who passed away back in 1982, used to play this song as a "break song" when he was young and in a country band in Roulette, Pa. He was in this band in the mid to late 40's. He used to play it on his guitar when I was young and, of course I thought it was great, because my father was singing it. It brought back a lot of great memories of my dad. So, thank you Steven for remembering this song, as I had forgotten the lyrics to it.
