'Parenthood': Asperger's, unplanned pregnancy, hospital waiting rooms and other joys
Now that "Friday Night Lights" has finished its run - at least on DirecTV - "Parenthood" has quickly taken its place as the show that makes us cry every single time we watch it. Tuesday's Season 2 finale was no exception. In fact, only one word had been spoken in the entire episode -- "Hello?" -- before we were bawling. "Parenthood" is one of the NBC bubble shows, meaning it's not guaranteed a Season 3 pickup but it's not a write-off, either, and we've got our fingers crossed for more.
Thankfully, we were left without any particularly devastating cliffhangers this week. While Amber's car accident certainly rocked the Bravermans' world, she'll be okay -- though her buddy Gary will be charged with a well-deserved DUI. Sarah's first play went smoothly (thanks to some not-so-little white lies from the director) and Jasmine showed a chink in her armor when she finally stopped by to see Crosby's new house. Max demonstrated a new understanding of how his Asperger's impacts the way he relates to the world.
Next season -- if there is a next season -- it's baby, baby, baby. Just as Adam lost his job, Christina announced that she was pregnant. He might've been a little more unhappy about the situation, except that it means his daughter isn't the one who is knocked up, so he's more optimistic than Christina expected. Meanwhile, Joel and Julia have made the decision to adopt a new child, so that process will likely feature heavily next year.
If there is a next year.

I want more Parenthood! There's no great family shows on TV anymore. They need to bring it back for at least two more years!
Adam & Christina's pregnancy is right out of the movie, so it wasn't much of a shocker. Would have been nice if the reveal had been as dark as it was in the movie. Adam losing his job, however, felt trite and arbitrary.
If there is a Season Three, I certainly hope that there is more development of Joel's character (and perhaps some actual parenting of the younger children) as well as finding a way to make Jasmine sympathetic; how does a woman who deprived a father of even the knowledge of his child (and she only let Crosby meet Jabar because Jabar wanted to meet his father) for five years and then abusively controlling in her relationship with Crosby claim the moral high ground? I mean no disrespect to Joy Bryant, but I'm thinking Tom Hulce had a better deal when his character had the son without having to constantly struggle to prove himself to the mother.
I agree with Kenny. It's the show I most look forward to every week. The acting is fantastic by EVERY single cast member (with the POSSIBLE exception of Drew- I can't tell if his character is supposed to be that withdrawn and forced at the same time or if that is in part due to the boy's acting. I teach high schoolers and I actually do find most high school boys to be pretty awkward when expressing their feelings).
I am having a hard time to adjusting to how "seasons" work now. I don't get when they end or when they begin. I remember the September to May days. Those seem long gone. If it is picked up again by NBC, when will it most likely start up again?
Also, what is the best way to urge NBC to pick the show up again? Any insight as to who the best person/department/??? is to contact? Does snailmail impact significantly more than email?
I wish Amber had died and Crosby along with her.
I look forward to this show each week. great acting, good storylines ,many which hit close to events that
have happened in my own life. I hope this show re-
turns. the finale had me in tears.
I really hope they pick it up for a couple more seasons!! I am a late comer to this show and I want more!
I really like how the show tied up some loose ends this seasons and without the usual cliffhangers that drive me batty. Anyone could have seen Adam loosing his job a mile away. When you have that type of adversarial relationship with your boss and that you don't respect him, then it is very likely you will loose your job.
Amber getting a talk down from her grandfather was priceless. Well done! I would hate to see the whole episode about trying to get through to Amber. The Crosby/Jasmine thing is dragging though. Other than that, very hopeful to see another season. They can do a lot with the Julia adoption thing. Highlight the lack of support for those experiencing secondary infertility.
great season..the best drama on television right now..just a thought, i believe max will have quite a hard time with the addition of a sibling, so joel and julia should adopt adam and christina's new baby..it would be a braverman and it would stay in the family. :))
I give credit to Jason Katims for the hard work he's done with both Parenthood and Friday Night Lights. Now that FNL is in its final season, could Parenthood be next and what does NBC going to do within a month from now when the network TV upfronts begins? It's still a 50/50 chance if the quiet dramedy gets renewed for Season Three or if they canceled, Mr. Katims has got to find another TV pilot in the works.
I love Parenthood!! I really want the show to continue. The actors are fantastic and the story lines are great. I have learned so much from the show, especially since my boyfriend's nephew has aspergers. I relate with him so much better. The show is a keeper.
