'Grey's Anatomy' music event: Was it 'Rent' or low-rent?

We would be lying if we didn't admit that we have been looking forward to the music event on "Grey's Anatomy" for just as long as you have. We'd also be lying if we didn't say that when the doctors first broke out into song we giggled a bit at the sheer absurdity of it all.
And we're not sure if we ever really got used to them breaking out in song. A musical episode is just really hard to do. And we know very few television shows that can pull it off. Even in most musical theatre we've watched, plot falls victim to the conceit of the musical performances.
Were the voices good? Certainly. Were the songs entertaining? In and of themselves, yes. Ultimately, though, we were never quite able to suspend our disbelief. In other words, it never stopped feeling jarring.
We would have loved to just watch Callie (Sara Ramirez) and the team play the dramatic events of her injuries and surgeries out without having a random song pull us out of the story.
"Grey's" has done this colleague in danger storyline before and nailed it. They've even had the audacity to kill a well-liked regular character before. We don't think adding music to this episode made it better. It took a risk with the musical elements, definitely, but we've seen them take bigger risks that truly did become game-changers for the series and not one character had to sing a note.
What's your take? Did it bowl you over or are you just glad it's over?

I loved all of it Sara Ramirez was amazing and so was chyler leigh and Ellen Pompeo!! The whole cast did an amazing job and i really thought it added to the drama and intensity!!
I disagree with this article... The show was wonderful - terrific portrayal of lead character in serious accident. Very emotional - very touching. As she lay there - everything surreal and intense and moving. Great job!
I agree wholeheartedly with this article. The musical numbers were jarring and ultimately unnecessary. While I appreciate the explanation of how the brain does weird things, I really don't understand why this was done other than to try to latch on to Glee's success, which is pointless.
At one point I had to just mute the show and read the captions (ignoring the ones with musical notes.)
I was really nervous for this weeks episode. I just had to keep focusing on the fact that this was not REALLY happening, it was just callie's messed up car-through-the-winshield-brain that heard the music. Or so we were led to believe in the beginning. But I think that was ruined when they took the music outside of the room she was in. It was a little ridiculous, but it didn't take the emotion out of it. As long as it doesn't EVER happen again, I would call it a pretty successful risk.
This Article is trash that was by far the BEST GA show ever. It was a nail biter from start to finish and it was also a tear jerker. I loved all the sing the cast did a terrific job. My hat goes off to them. Can't wait until next week.
Some parts worked, some didn't. What was good was VERY good, what was bad made me FF through it. Sada is a great singer and Ellen's solo was surprisingly good. Kevin McKidd's rock solo in how to operate was painful. I wish there weren't quite as many songs but the drama was really intense.
I so agree with this article. The music was too jarring. When Owen busted out singing while the attendings were screaming, they all looked at him like he lost his mind. I liked the sunshine bit mostly because of Eli/Miranda and Alex. They should have waited until Callie/Arizona's wedding episode to do a musical. Also what was the purpose of bring Addison back just to give her two lines? Her and Callie was super close and her and Mark were close.
I think the cast did a great job, but it was a little jarring. The feelings and the anxiety were lost when you were judging the singing or thinking what song would they sing next. Or what was so and so going to sing.
If it had been done a little differently ie. only Callie singing, that would have been better. I didn't feel her performances were as jarring.
Still, good overall.
I LOVED this show! It was refreshing, creative, moving. I had no idea Sara is not only a talented actor, but also a gifted singer!! It's great to see a different aspect of the actors - change things up once in awhile!
I somewhat agree & disagree with the article. There were times when I feel like they overdid it with the musical numbers -- the scene where Owen busts out singing while the attendings were screaming is an example. However, the opening sequence is, I believe, one of the best I've seen on television. I especially loved when Callie & Owen started harmonizing -- goose bumps!! And then adding Bailey later on - WOW! The scene was very moving.
I think some of the musical numbers were extremely successful, but they could have cut back on some of it.
