Carole King is the 'American Idol' Top 6 theme
The theme for the "American Idol" Top 6 contestants was announced Thursday night (April 21) at the end of the results show - it's Carole King, which should prove interesting.King is a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and we are big fans of her music. "Tapestry" is really her watershed effort - the 1971 album was named No. 36 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest Albums of All Time.
But we aren't sure how the Idols are going to handle her music. Katelyn Epperly covered "I Feel the Earth" move in Season 9 and got pans from the judges, then was sent packing. Brooke White took on "You've Got a Friend" in Season 7 and did very well, but Carole King is right in Brooke White's wheelhouse. King's songs are quietly great and kind of niche - this year's Idols are going to have to really make them their own or it's going to be a long night.
If you're wondering where you've heard the Carole King that is non-music related, she had a recurring guest role on "Gilmore Girls" as Sophie Bloom the music store owner and also sang the opening title song for the show.

DUMBEST theme week ever! Can anyone even name 6 Carole King songs? (without using the internet) Didn't think so!!!
I can BCD1414, but I am guessing none of these kids can. Geez, I bet even Lauren Alaina's parents weren't even more than a couple of years old when Carole was most popular!
Not only is this a great theme week BCD, you know more Carole King songs than you think you do. She wrote for many other singers. Many of her songs have been remade. You watch this week. It will be the best night on Idol this season. She is one of the reasons the 70's were the best musical decade ever.
They could do better than this in picking a theme.
Afterf wrongly attributing "Natural Woman" to aRetha Franklin a few weeks back, it is nice that AI is giving this huge talent her due. Every contestant with the exception of the loud off-key screecher Jacob, should do well with any song off her Tapestry album. Jacob did an awful job with Dance with my Father Again" and should have been gone. He will get his medicine this week. The two girls and scotty should have no trouble with this. James and Casey will be OKay. Question is who getsw to sing "You've Got a Friend. ???
I'm an old lady, and I LOVED Carole King years ago. I associate those songs with my college years.....which was a LONG time ago! Great music, but what's going on with Idol? Are they getting paid huge sums of money to make these contestants revive music not in style now days? No wonder it's a bit confusing when they step off the Idol stage and fall flat on their faces. Teach them how to sing TODAY's music and maybe they'll sell a few more CDs.
Carole King had such a great songwriting career that many of her works deserve to come 50-30 years into the present and be reworked and rearranged by good singers.
Haley is the most versatile singer (enjoy her before she joins Carly Smithson and Siobhan Magnus as too early voteoffs).
I think she would do best to avoid the slooooooow folkie and overplayed stuff (NO You've Got a Friend, Feel the Earth Move, So Far Away, Locomotion, Natural Woman, etc. ) and go look at some of Kings best jazz, blues and rock selections. "Hi De Ho, Restless Heart, Home Again".
Fight with Casey and James over "Jazzman". Though whoever does it would be called predictable.
James is the 2nd best of the season, IMO, and may last until the Finale.
Not so interested in the other 4.
Though Scotty would actually slay "Nightingale" if he and producers are smart enough to pick it.
Carole King is the greatest songwriter ever. I can not only name 6 of her songs I know more than 6 of her ALBUMS. Front and back. I still have them too. Should be a great week on IDOL.
I do not pay much attention to Idol anymore. But, I'll be watching Carole King...Weds.Nite
I assume the contestants can sing any Carole King song and not just Tapestry. If so, she also wrote songs like "One Fine Day" so it should be a good week!
