Bret Easton Ellis calls 'Glee' 'a puddle of HIV.' Seriously.

Novelist Bret Easton Ellis, best known for "American Psycho" and "Less than Zero," decided to take on the "Glee" phenomenon via Twitter on Tuesday night.

"I like the idea of 'Glee' but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I've stepped into a puddle of HIV?" he writes.

Oy vey.

Ellis is a self-proclaimed satirist, and the majority of his public correspondence can be considered tongue in cheek, but to use this particular metaphor when discussing a show that has been largely praised for its portrayal of gay youth is unfortunate at best. It certainly does little to aid Ellis' reputation.

While he's hardly the first person to insult "Glee" or to criticize its relatively high number of gay characters compared to other teen television shows, the source is a bit surprising here. Ellis himself does not identify as gay or straight, but he doesn't think the word "bisexual" applies, either. "I think the last time I slept with a woman was five or six years ago, so the bi thing can only be played out so long," he says. "But I still use it, I still say it."
