'The Secret Circle' pilot loses a coven member

britt-phoeb-dekk.jpgTurns out it's six down and none to go, "Secret Circle" fans. At least for the pilot.

Sources confirm to Zap2it exclusively that the character Doug Henderson has been removed from the CW pilot.

In the original pilot script (penned by Andrew Miller), Doug is part of the seven-member coven of witches which the pilot focuses on. He's a football player who was bumped from up from third-string to starting quarterback thanks to the coven's powers. In January, "The Vampire Diaries'" showrunner and executive producer Kevin Williamson was brought in to rewrite Miller's script and soon the project was picked up to pilot. Fast forward to March and Doug is no longer in the pilot script.

So does this mean the character is gone from the project for good? Put down the spell books, "TSC" fans. We're told it's simply too early to tell as the pilot (which began filming this week in Vancouver) hasn't been picked up to go to series yet. It if is picked up, you could very well see Doug in the series.

Doug Henderson isn't the only coven member to be lost in the journey from page to screen. In the books series by L.J. Smith, the coven is comprised of 12 members: Cassie Blake, Adam Conant, Diana Meade, Nick Armstrong, Faye Chamberlain, Doug and Chris Henderson, Melanie Glaser, Laurel Quincey, Suzan Whittier, Sean Dulany and Deborah Armstrong.

Chris (Doug's twin brother), Melanie, Laurel, Suzan, Sean and Deborah were all trimmed. We expected this to happen as it would be pretty hard to introduce and fully develop 12 different characters -- in the coven alone.

The project centers on Californian teen Cassie (Britt Robertson) who moves to her mother's hometown of New Salem, Maine, and soon discovers she's a witch. Turns out, she's also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil. Typical teenage girl problems.

Joining Robertson in the coven are Thomas Dekker (Adam), Shelley Hennig (Diana), Louis Hunter (Nick), Phoebe Tonkin (Faye) and Jessica Parker Kennedy (new character Melissa).

Deadline recently reported that Sarah Fain and Elizabeth Craft has stepped down as executive producers on the project. Williamson and Miller will executive produce the pilot, with Williamson also serving as showrunner.

Wish they would've dropped one of the girls instead. Not sure that the two guys in the cast are up to carrying the "hottie" torch by themselves. And, yes, that must be a component of this (and every) series on CW.

Where did this notion come from that girls want to watch only "girls?" Doesn't Supernatural and Vampire Diaries blow that theory to smithereens?

KW did a great job translating Vampire Diaries to TV--I actually think that the show is much better than the books.

However, I fear this adaptation may go the other way. "Secret Circle" is pretty awesome with 12 members, and "Glee" manages to juggle a group this large. (Not everyone gets the same screen time, but you can follow who everyone is.)

And WHY create a new girl character when you're excising four already? The four they kicked out have specific personalities in the book--surely one of them would have been OK to keep.

Add to this that Britt Robertson is nowhere near the mousy-brown Cassie (which is important because of the distinction between Cassie and the beautiful/glamorous Diana and Faye).

So I'm just worried.

Lost had several characters, and many main characters as well as secondary ones... so maybe the average CW viewer might be confused, I don't think that the older demographic would be confused by that many characters!!I'd hoped that Britt would get another chance to shine after LUX.

it just sounds like lazy writing which is idiotic since someone already wrote the damn characters for them. i agree with Jason that these "men" they cast are just not as hot as say Damon or Dean. Sorry.. looks like a colossal fail to me.

blahhhhhh :P pumped

I just think Britt shouldn't have been casted as Cassie. Hopefully it doesn't dissapoint.

So that's what Williamson was doing in Dawson's Creek and Vancouver a few months ago wondering is he looking for any mature characters ...or hairstylist, makeup artists i'm more than willing to contribute ...

Ok I ready a full bio and they are killing off the mom from the beginning, they say that's why she goes to love with her grandma. But I guess they are doing it different. Hmm maybe the grandma doesn't die? Lol

I don't think the males are very hot but as long as they and the rest of the cast can act and their characters are interesting, I don't care. In my opinion, hotties lose their appeal quickly if they can't act. Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford is a perfect example of that. He is gorgeous but unfortunely has zero on screen charisma and his acting skills are weak.
