Michael Rosenbaum reveals 'Smallville' finale details, pays homage on 'Breaking In'
Michael Rosenbaum just can't escape "Smallville."Not that he's complaining. Quite the opposite, actually. His new FOX show "Breaking In," which premieres April 6, has an upcoming episode that takes place at Comic-Con. Zap2it was on the set and got a sneak peek at all the costumes.
Guess what Rosenbaum's character Dutch will be wearing? You guessed it -- a Superman shirt. Before you go thinking he's dressed as the Man of Steel, he is actually dressed as a beloved '80s character who happens to wear a Superman shirt. Speculate away!
"It's a little homage. Adam Goldberg, the creator, really asked a lot and I said, 'Whatever you want,'" Rosenbaum says of the meta moment. "It's comedy, let's make fun of ourselves. I'll put on a Superman shirt, I'll do whatever."
Speaking of whatever, his character Dutch seems to be down for whatever, something Rosenbaum embraces. He describes him as "complete douche on the outside, nice guy on the inside," who wears Uggs, bleaches his hair and wears two watches at the same time.
"Smallville" fans looking for their favorite bald-headed anti-hero are in for a shock, to say the least. So what does Rosenbaum think his fans' initial reaction will be to Dutch? "The first fan reaction would be like, 'I like him better as Lex. He looks better bald. He shouldn't be on this show. He should be Lex forever,'" he teases affectionately. "that would probably be their first reaction. Hopefully some of them will go, 'Oh, he's actually kind of funny. This is good,' or maybe not. I think one thing they'll appreciate is that whatever character I do, I go balls out."
Obviously, we had to be greedy and ask Rosenbaum for even more scoop on the series finale of "Smallville," and while he wouldn't reveal too much -- like if he shot any scenes with anyone besides Tom Welling -- he did say you will be seeing more of Lex Luthor than you might have originally thought."We did a lot. I know people thought, 'Oh, he only went up for one day.' We did 19 hours," he explains. "Okay, for anyone out there who is like, 'Oh, he only went out there for one day,' I was up there for 19 hours."
He continues, "We did four different things. Two nice scenes and then two other specialty things that I won't tell you about. I'm a part of the finale and I think it's important."
Count 'em, people. That's four Lex scenes/"specialty things" you can look forward to. We now leave it to you to debate just what those specialty things are.
Finally, we asked Rosenbaum what "Smallville" has meant to him personally. He took a moment before answering, "The show is a big part of my life. I did seven years of it and you know, I know the make-up artist and the hair people -- well, not the hair people [laughs] -- but I know the make-up artist better than I know my own family. I spent two hours a day with them a day for seven years, you know, the whole crew. I had nicknames for the whole crew.
"It's a part of life, a part of my life that I'll always remember and that I'll look fondly on," he says. "What can I say? Great times. It's nice that it's finally ending, to end that chapter in your life."

coooooooooooooooooooool
Michael is a sweetheart! Love his chemistry with Tom, Erica, Kristin...the whole cast. Very excited to see his new show too!
Rosenbaum rocks!
the longer cry baby mr don't say if he has scenes with ed the moore peaple are going to start to think he don't like her and that will make him a ash hole but the bigger ash hole will be tom welling for saying it is ok.because lets face it tom only cares about past actors i bet that makes to the ones who stayed feel good it's like a slap in the face of them way to go tom you prick.
Whatever, Michael. Some of us have worked on sets before and knew exactly what 19 hours translated into.
Doesn't erase the fact that every other main cast member actually bothered to give the long term fans that supported them, watched them, and followed them an actual multi-episode character arc.
Hell it's beyond apparent now that he's not even in both halves of the series finale. And a Superman t-shirt is supposed to make up for that?
Please.
@Gabi
Blame the writers etc for not using Michael/Lex to the best they could have.
They had 7years to wrap it up..but no, spent so much time with freak of the week crap.
He gave it everything and they treated him like crap.
No one bar Michael and the crew know why he left so dont start talking like you do!
On a positive note - Well looking forward to the new show! =)
Oh lord. The guy comes back and people are still going to ***** about it. I could've done with a brief shot of him stepping out of the shadows but we get to enjoy four scenes with him in them. Not to mention the fact that he gave seven full years of his life and career to the show and fulfilled his contract. He didn't leave early and he wasn't fired. Time to leave off him and enjoy that he did come back.
And it sounds like he might be Sloth from 'The Goonies' at the Con in the 'BI' episode.
I'm already bored of Rosenbaum's interviews that are begging for attention for the new sitcom no one will watch. Painfully clear he got his 19 hours on set and his "blood money" directly out of Tom's pocket just to be able to get out there and be worth interviewing for the first time in three years.
I'm sorry.
All I got out of Lex for the finale was part 2 of two hours for about 4 scenes. Wow, that's amazing. For that much of an investment in my desires as a fan, I feel justified in tuning out to "Breaking In."
@Paula
I don't care that he left, I supported him leaving. I thought Al & Miles shafted him; but that excuse ended when Al & Miles LEFT.
What I don't support his him claiming that he "did it for the fans" and yet can't bother to give those same fans more than FOUR SCENES when they've been wanting to see him for almost three years.
I know there is a lot of ~selective memory~ with Michael's fans but the truth of the matter is he's been in and out of talks with Smallville for at least year. They wanted him for the premiere and openly admitted they wrote it for sure thinking he'd come back from the way talks went.
So don't buy his act that he just one day magnanimously descended on set to give back to his fans out of the goodness of his heart for no personal gain. Cause that? Is a lie.
Truth of the matter is Smallville's true meta is that Michael is much more Lex Luthor than most of the fanbase realizes.
I'm really please that MR is coming back for the finale. I've missed him the past couple of years and it'll be good seeing him again.
I'm also glad that MR has other things going for him, including his new series and his indie short film!
