Jennifer Hudson's 'One Shining Moment' over: CBS drops her version of NCAA tournament-closing song

one-shining-moment-jhud.jpgJennifer Hudson has the No. 2 album in the country, but she won't have the honor of closing out the NCAA tournament next week.

CBS has decided to drop her version of its tourney-closing song, "One Shining Moment," and go back to the previous version sung by the late Luther Vandross. The "American Idol" alum/Oscar winner's take on the song -- and CBS' production of the video montage after last year's tournament -- wasn't especially well-received by hoops fans, particularly the multiple cuts to Hudson singing, which meant that much less time for highlight clips.

"Both versions are great. [Hudson] did a great job," CBS Sports production chief Harold Bryant tells the Houston Chronicle. "We just felt like we wanted to go back to Luther."

"One Shining Moment" has had multiple singers since its debut in 1987 -- Teddy Pendergrass and the song's composer, David Barrett, did it before Vandross -- but the video montage that played along with it had always focused exclusively on action from the tournament prior to last year. Much of the negative reaction from fans of the decidedly cheesy but goosebump-inducing tune -- yeah, we admit it -- came from the cutaways to Hudson.

Hudson's version of the song from last year and the last time Vandross' track was used, in 2009, are below, for your compare-and-contrast enjoyment. Frankly, we're glad to have the old version back.

Jhud did a super job with that song. It's all good! CBS its your lost. Taken down the best female vocalist in the business today hands down. However, this won't make are break the lovely super star she is already in the history books.

I like Jennifer's version. What a bunch of BS that she's in it too much. She's just in it for a very few seconds in total, and I think it's kind of cool to cut back to the studio and then back to the footage. Breaks it up a bit and makes it interesting. Hopefully she has still collected all the money owed to her even though CBS made the stupid decision not to air it.

"One Shining Moment" is a powerful song. It hits you in the heart. I love Jannifer.

Thank God the NCAA and CBS came to their senses. We watch one shining moment to see the highlights of the tournament. If we wanted to watch a music video we would watch a music video.

That would be "your loss" and "make or break," Norma. Despite your inability to express yourself, you are quite right that Jennifer is the best in the biz--I love her. But this is about basketball, not singing, and like all NCAA fans, I hated the cuts to her. I already know what she looks like, and this isn't a JHud video. One Shining Moment should always be all tourney highlights. You're also right that CBS doesn't have a clue. If they did, they'd go back to the original recording of the song by its composer, David Barrett, which they used for the first several years.

Once again; the usual backlash from people wanting to control the cultural references in both video, music and visual effect. Diversity of voices singing a song should not be frowned upon as a bad thing as it is here with J Hud's version. The explosiveness of her voice IS her singing staple; she is known by it. Just as a Celtic singers staple soothing undertones. Why can't Americans learn to appreciate differences and establish them, and not disregard them as irrelevant and try to tear them down? The visual images of her were too powerful for most WF to handle- and thats just keeping it very real! She did HER singing and she did it well. If you can not appreciate the cultural diffrences in voices- check yourself a little deeper, you might realize you've got some racial issues that you didn't create for yourself, but allowed societals view shape them for you. I for one,Can appreciate an Asain version, an Indian version and a Irish version of "one shining moment" just as well as the Luther V. version. IF you can't do the same, check your self closely.

"One Shining Moment" should be sung in reflection, much like the older versions by Vandross and Pendergrass. Hudson wails too much, trying to show her vocal talents (which I am not criticizing; the girl can sing) which overshadows the purpose of the song, and the events that took place. Vandross and Pendergrass sang with a calmness and pause, which Hudson misses in her version
