HBO cancels 'In Treatment,' inadvertently pleases scientologists

HBO no longer feels the need to go to therapy. 

The network has decided not to renew "In Treatment" for a fourth season. First reported by Variety, the cancellation doesn't come as much of a surprise. It never did much in the ratings department.

Debuting in 2008 to much critical acclaim, the series originally aired in a 5-episodes-a-week format, with psychiatrist Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) treating a different patient four nights in a row and seeing his own therapist on the fifth. Later seasons saw the series lump two episodes into hour-long blocks.

Over it's three-season run, "In Treatment" saw many different actors take a seat in Paul's office, including Amy Ryan, Blair Underwood, Debra Winger and Dianne Wiest. It also holds the distinction of introducing American audiences to "Alice in Wonderland" and "Jane Eyre" star Mia Wasikowska.

Based on an Israeli series "BeTipul," "In Treatment" earned a Golden Globe for Byrne and an Emmy for Wiest.
