'Bones': What does Emily Deschanel's pregnancy mean for Brennan?
A very sincere mazel tov is in order, since "Bones" star Emily Deschanel just announced that she and husband David Hornsby are expecting their first child later in 2011.
And now that we've spent a few hours being happy for them and their impending bundle... it's time to think about our show.
An off-camera pregnancy is bound to affect the dynamic of the show, no matter which way you cut it. And the way we see it, one of three scenarios will play out in the coming year when "Bones" returns for its not-yet-confirmed-but-obviously-happening Season 7.
1. Brennan gets pregnant too
We'd hate to see happenstance dictate storyline, but worse things have happened. There have been multiple hints that Brennan and Booth (David Boreanaz) might finally get together at the end of Season 6. And, as many an unexpected parent know, one time is all it takes.
There is, of course, the chance that Brennan could get pregnant by some other means or man -- but really, we just don't see that happening. It's clearer all the time that our duo are intended to get together at some point, and they've already dealt with more than enough obstacles and third wheels.
2. Strategically-placed corpses
The classic TV maneuver of covering up a baby bump with props is more common on sitcoms -- pillows, lampshades, roast turkeys, etc. -- so imagine the how much fun they could have hiding Deschanel's bun with rotting, disfigured body parts and various laboratory paraphernalia?
We feel like this is the sort of thing "Bones" writers would kill to play around with.
3. A summer delivery leaves the show unaffected
That pretty much says it all. Deschanel has not shared her due date, and any time before September could technically leave production unaffected -- though it's natural to assume she might want to skip an episode or two after the baby comes. Even TV stars deserve maternity leave.

I think they'll have fun with it. Bones strikes me as the type of show that, if something like this were to happen, the writers would see it as an opportunity rather than a burden. Unfortunately Bones has already had a pregnancy arc recently, so whether they'd want to go with that a second time is anyone's guess. Alternately, this is a Fox show, and Fox has never been exclusively tied to the traditional Sept-May season (see, for example, The X-Files and many other shows). They could simply push the start of season 7 back a couple months, maybe to November or December.
But it is so nice when good friends (like Brennan and Angela) have babies around the same time.
brennan in the finale goes to visit family /they are establishing a new home closed to her brother/in s7 the reunion is her returning to work and to booth.
I really hope they go for a Booth and Brennan baby. I know Angela would have just had one, but it would be nice for a second one to come. It would be so much more interesting if Brennan was to become pregnant to Booth, it would add that dynamic that has been missing since Hannah came into the picture. I really hope they would go with a pregnancy, I certainly will be watching the season.
It's too soon for a B&B baby and of course any other scenario of a Brennan pregnancy is ridiculous. I think we need to see the courtship first. I wouldn't want to see the show just skip the newness of their couple relationship and go right to parenthood. But if they do, my baby name choices would be family names: Joseph Henry for a boy. Christine Joy for a girl.
I hope they don't try what Law and order SVU did when Mariska was pregnant. They put her character Olivia Benson on an undercover job. Ugh. not my fav episodes. I hope they dont try that with 'Bones' (Emily)
I have to say that as much as I wan't a Booth and Brennan pregnancy, and I REALLY do, it looks like from photos that David Boreanaz has posted on twitter that the producers are just hiding Emily's pregnancy. She already has a bit of a bump and they have put her in a large puffy overcoat, so I'm kindof dissapointed but it looks like the show will be uneffected by the pregnancy.
I think they should go for option 1. Have Brennan pregnant with Booth's child. This will definitely boost ratings due to fans wanting to see them together even closer with a baby. So what if Angela just had a baby. What will be more awesome than to have best friends babies grow up together. The writers should consider having Brennan tell Booth she's lonely and wants to be with him, makes unplanned love a few episodes before season 6 ends and tell Booth in the finale that she pregnant, then tie the pregnancy in at the beginning of season 7. Joseph Henry and Christina Joy would be the perfect names!
I really would like if they would work the pregnancy into the story. Since Brennan always refuses a relationship with Booth because of their partnership, a baby would really force them to see the reality and figure something out. As we know Booth, he will never leave his child alone.^^
The thing is... Brennan having Booth's baby would not be so far-fetched or rushed. Has everyone forgotten that last season Brennan was in talks of having a baby and kept insisting on Booth to donate his sperm?? We haven't heard anything more in the current season regarding Brennan's wishes to conceive, but they could bring back that storyline. And they wouldn't have to rush Brennan and Booth's relationship if they continued with him just providing the means for her to have a baby. Just a thought.
