Zap2it On The Scene: American Idol Top 13 party

'American Idol': Will we be seeing Paul McDonald's rhinestone suit again?

paul-suit.jpgWe're not sure who the bigger star is: "American Idol" contestant Paul McDonald, his uber-white teeth (they have their own Twitter account) or his white suit with red roses that he debuted in Las Vegas.

McDonald wore his signature suit again when he was put through to the Top 13, but it was nowhere to be seen when Zap2it caught up with him at the show's after-party.

Our curiosity got the better of us and we had to ask where The Suit was. "I can't overdo the white jacket! You gotta save it for special occasions," he says with a laugh.

We're guessing Paul, 26, will be breaking out The Suit for all the big shows (which is pretty much every results show when you think about it), but is there a chance we'll be seeing more showy suits from the "quirky" contestant in the coming weeks?

"It depends. I'm in the works. My friend that made that jacket for me, I've tossed some more ideas his way, so there might be," he says. "It depends on how far I get on the show and how much money I have in the bank. You guys might see someting fancy coming up."

He's not kidding about seeing how much money he has in the bank to pull off more suits. He told The Hollywood Reporter the white suit set him back $4,500.

After discussing his much buzzed-about wardrobe, we asked Paul about his band The Grand Magnolias, which he is currently on hiatus from. "I know those guys fairly well. They're good friends of mine," Paul jokes at first before talking about the band's recent iTunes success: Their self-titled album shot up to No. 3 on the rock charts and their sales increased 146%.

"I think their album surpassed The Avett Brothers on the rock chart, which blew my mind. I was like, what is going on here, man?! I can't say too much about those guys. They're my friends. They're happy that all this stuff is going on," he says. "It blows my mind because literally the past five years as an artist I've been touring and busting my butt to get to this point. It makes me genuinely happy to see that I got on TV and sang a few cover songs, but my real stuff is my art -- singing and songwriting. So it's really cool and humbling to see people send me messages like, 'Your old record is unbelievable.'"

While Paul prefers to perform his own songs (like "American Dreams," which he performed to make it into the Top 24), his dream cover would be a song from The Black Keys. Alas, he cannot perform their songs because they haven't been cleared by the show.

Do you think Paul has what it takes to be the next American Idol? What would you like to hear him cover on the show? If you could design a suit for Paul, what would it look like? Sound off in the comments.

HATE THAT SPACTIC FREAK AND HIS WHINY ONE TRICK PONY VOICE. He hosuld hnave never made it in the top 13. Remember how no one bought the CD's from that other novelty act, the white hair old guy from season 3 I think? Same here

Paul stands out in that Rose Jacket and isn't that what it is all about. If you can't get the fans attention, you go home. Don't know how we are suppose to judge these people until we hear them sing live. Is that going to happen?

@Danny. What an ignorat thing to say. Its not being Spactic. Spactic isnt even a word. Its called passion and love for the music. When a tribe does a ritual they feel it. when people dance they feel it. Why should paul be any different. Paul is in a band called The Grand Magnolias, top 20 on itunes in the Albums of Rock. His voice is not puny, its simply passionate and unique. Not everyone likes pop nowadays. Different is good, and Paul is Different

@Danny, just stick to your POP idols and leave Paul to us. Apparently, you're the one who doesn't know how to appreciate all forms of music. Unimaginative much? Just vote for your favorite because we've got Paul's back.
