'American Idol': Jackson family allegedly offended by James Durbin's 'Pepsi moment' quip

durbin-flames.jpgRemember Wednesday (March 30) evening when James Durbin literally set the "Idol" stage on fire with his take on Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting?"

At the end of an exhaustingly energetic performance, Durbin jumped off the top of a grand piano which then -- BAM! -- burst into flames on queue.

The first thought that went through our heads was, of course, Michael Jackson's unfortunate run-in with pyrotechnics while filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984. Apparently Durbin was on the same wavelength, because when Ryan Seacrest asked him how he felt about his performance, Durbin replied, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

Less than 24 hours later and a "source" from the Jackson family has allegedly let it be known -- via TMZ -- that the family is displeased. Particularly Papa Joe Jackson, who was offended that the M.J. reference wasn't dropped from the West coast "Idol" feed.

What do you think? Was Durbin out of line?

Personally, I think it's just a poorly used comment by a young singer. Don't get your panties in a wad, Jacksons. It was a mistake, that's all.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Are you serious?! It was certainly an understandable statement as it did happen (unfortunately) to M Jackson...however, it didn't kill him. Most people doing that number would have made the same comment Durbin did. Get a life people!!

Not at all

Who cares what Durbin says. Why take what he says to heart.

You're kidding, right?! Ughhh....when will everyone stop being so offended by common sense remarks! Who wouldn't be a little concerned about jumping off a piano at the right time to avoid an accident like M Jackson's?!! He only referenced it because of the danger...He certainly didn't come across as being insensitive...just relieved it didn't happen to him too! For crying out loud!

I forgot no one jokes about Michael Jackson now that he's dead....

Wow, he didn't even mention Michael, it was a harmless truthful answer that was prompted by Ryan. Something you would truly be worried about...

They should not be offended by what he said. Give me a BREAK!

He had every right to be concerned about the possibility of his hair catching fire due to the hair products.

The family most likely was offended by the laughter of the audience. But, it was funny because that comment was so unexpected, "a pepsi moment."

If anyone would be upset I would think it would be Coke because they are a major sponsor of Idol and not Pepsi. Don't mention a competitors product on a tv show.

I think the less famous Jacksons are desperate to do anything for publicity.
