'American Idol': Casey Abrams nabs 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' first Nirvana song ever on the show
First Judas Priest, now Nirvana. "Idol's" getting so hardcore. In another "American Idol" first, Casey Abrams has chosen to do "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the Birth Year theme of Wednesday night's (March 16) show, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe tells Ryan Seacrest.
Lythgoe also spills the beans about Thia Megia's song choice, which is "Colors of the Wind" from the Disney movie "Pocahontas." Do you think Thia went back to her safe ballad territory after the jazzy part of "Smile" got pans last week?
Finally, Nigel also says there is a virus sweeping the group again this year. "The worse thing about the [contestants' mansion] is once one person gets a cold, it starts spreading around. Paul got really bad sinusitis this week, which you won't notice with his voice though."
Listen to the full interview below. "American Idol" airs Wednesday and Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

I'm very interested to see how Casey will do with Nirvana tonight in case if it's either good or not.
Love him, but that sounds very risky for Casey. Hope he can pull it off. Thia can sing but the beauty pageant performances will kill her and that other girl (Pia?) in the end...they are both technically strong but completely devoid of emotion.
I am thinking that James should try some of Queensryches' Scarborough fair to add a bit of change and yet keep true to his rocker roots...just sayin', (Silent Lucidity might be an idea too???)
That's so contrary to what that song is about. Kurt is rolling in his grave right now!
