'The Cape': Season 2 looking increasingly unlikely as episode order is reduced

the-cape-explosion-320.jpgWe've got some bad news for fans of NBC's superhero drama, "The Cape."

NBC has cut down their initial episode order for the series' first season from a planned 13 episodes to just 10, confirms TV Guide.

Since the series debuted, its ratings have fallen from 8.4 million viewers to an unhealthy 5.3 million viewers for Monday's episode. A rep for the network confirms that they plan to air the remaining episodes as originally scheduled.

The reduced episode order is typically the first nail in a TV series' coffin, so we'd be willing to bet that "The Cape" doesn't fare well for a possible Season 2.

Our hope is that the plug is pulled officially in time to free up the series' considerable talent, including lead David Lyons and Sci-Fi favorite Summer Glau, for pilot season.

Duh! It sucks!

If you can ignore the comic book-style cheesiness, pulpiness and plot holes, it's actually a pretty entertaining and ambitious series. I hope it sticks around long enough to find its footing.

I enjoy it, but I knew right from the previews it wouldn't fare well. They should have just given Heroes a mini-season order. They have like identical ratings.

It's one of the best shows on the air. I enjoy its style and the chemistry between not only the two leads, but also the circus of crime. Problem is people seem to not want to see this type of show anymore. It would have probably been better off being made as a movie or for cable. At least NBC is giving it a chance to tell its story, even reduced, so if they do pull the plug, at least we'll have a complete mini-series to enjoy on DVD later.

If they would remove the way over the top touches that are supposed to make it look more like a comic book but instead make it look like BAD comic books, and keep with the interpersonal drama and adventure/hero character developement the show could be AMAZING.
.
Instead they are chasing off their core audience and the casual audience at the same time. they just need a chance to fix that.

I DVRed it initially because it seemed a little hokey in the previews, but the character development was not bad and it walks the tightrope between drama and comic book fairly well. I'm one of the 5.3 MILLION people still watching.

Summer Glau is jinxed. She is a great star and anytime she appears on screen she steals the scene, but statistic show that any tv show with her in it, get cancelled early.

The show is incorrectly scheduled. It should run on saturdays a la "hercules", "xena", "andromeda", or add a few more teens and put it right after Smallville.

As for plot, everything is bad. Chess knows where the circus is, why hasn't he attacked again? why is cape saving chess? Why doesn't anybody realize that chess is orwell's dad? Why doesn't cape take his family and move to Panama?

Mrp makes a good point. A show like this would probably flourish in a less competitive market where it would have time to smarten up a bit. In the meat grinder of prime time, it's probably doomed.

Why is it that Chuck gets the same rating or less and still gets picked up?

If NBC decides to cancel this show, I hope any other network picks it up … hopefully we won’t be left hanging at the end of episode 10 … Maybe ABC can pick it up and have a great night of TV with “No Ordinary Family” followed by “the Cape” and end the night with “V” … order 10 episodes of each and have them be a mid-season replacement in 2012 …
