'Supernatural': Jensen Ackles says the classic rock is coming back
Music has always been one of the most important supporting characters on "Supernatural." We'd put it right up there with Castiel, Bobby, and the Impala. In fact, one draft of the pilot script described the soundtrack as so: "CUE MUSIC. And you can take your anemic alternative pop and shove it up your ass. We're playing Dean's music-- adrenaline pumping METAL-- and we're playing it loud."The draft also called our heroes Sam and Dean Harrison, which just doesn't have the same ring to it, but we digress.
The first couple of seasons of the show featured songs like "Renegade" by Styx, "Back in Black" by AC/DC, and "Laugh, I Nearly Died" by the Rolling Stones, but the classic rock has been less prevalent in more recent episodes. Zap2it was On the Scene at the Creation Entertainment Salute to Supernatural Event in Los Angeles when series star Jensen Ackles addressed fans' concerns.
"The music on the show has been pulled back a bit," he says. "A lot of it is budgetary reasons. These songs, these classic rock songs that everybody knows, are really expensive to get. A lot of times it's just not in the budget because production is such a heavy budgeted thing that they just don't have any money left when it's time to put the music in."
Never fear, "Supernatural" fans! The powers that be have heard your concerns and are making adjustments accordingly. "Thank you for complaining," Ackles says. "Because now they are starting to filter it back in and they're going to make an effort because it was a big part of the show." He notes that one of the reasons he fell in love with the pilot script was the line about the anemic alternative pop.
"That was a really cool part of the show and we've still got to carry on that sense. You're right, it's not the same without the music, so I agree. We're bringing it back though," he promises.
What are your favorite music moments from the show?
Our number one pick is "Carry On Wayward Son" from the first season's finale recap montage. It's become tradition to use the song in finales and premieres over the last six seasons, but nothing beats the first one for us.
We also love "Renegade," from the episode "Nightshifter," in which Sam and Dean have to take down SWAT team members and evade one very headstrong FBI agent in order to make it back to their car.
And who can forget this season's tearjerker Dean-without-Sam montage, set to "Beautiful Loser" by Bob Seger? We cry every time.
Weigh in below on your fave music moments, "Supernatural" fans.

God, Wayward Son and Renegade -- the end of Nightshifter is one of my favorite endings EVER, agreed.
I totally agree with our picks! I also really liked "Thunderstruck" from the Season 4 premiere. Also, "Carry on Wayward Son" was technically used before "Salvation" not "Devil's Trap" which was the true finale, but technicalities haha.
I also liked the use of Boston's "Foreplay/Long time" before "All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1". In all honesty, I love most of the songs and cues they used music for in this show.
AHH! How can I forget Ben Edlund's lovely juxtaposition in the episode "The End"? With the army guys shooting at the people infected with Croatoan playing "Do You Love Me? (Now That I Can Dance)". It just shows that the writer's can also know how important music is in a show to set the mood haha
"Renegade" from Nightshift tops my list. "Carry On My Wayward Son" when from making me think about the happy thoughts cause it reminded of the XBox 360 commercial with Jane Lynch playing Rock Band some family to wanting to bust into tears thinking about the Brothers Winchester and how much they go through each season.
All great picks but I also loved the use of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" at the beginning of Hunted. It's just so poignantly philosophical in it's use and fits the scenes and dialog perfectly. Or how about the tear jerking moment when Sam and Dean sing Wanted Dead or Alive in No Rest for the Wicked (you want to laugh because their singing is so bad but at the same time the lyrics are so damn true it hurts).
Some other great musical moments include Don't Fear The Reaper during Faith, Wheel in the Sky at the beginning of Bloodlust, Rooster at the end of Folsom Prison Blues, Hell's Bells on the season 3 opener, Run Through The Jungle during Sin City (just for the hilarity of a song about Vietnam fitting so well during that scene in the corrupt town and bar), and who can ever forget Heat of the Moment during Mystery Spot (the song of Sam's nightmares I'd imagine). How about Ready for Love during the Dean and Anna sex scene in Heaven and Hell, or Simple Man in Free to be Me and You?
But I think season 5 gave us 3 of I think the most unforgettable scene + music combinations in the show besides Carry on My Wayward Son + finale montage: Knockin on Heaven's Door during the firework's scene in Dark Side of the Moon, O Death during Death's first scene in Two Minutes to Midnight, and of course Rock of Ages as Dean comes rolling into Stall Cemetery during the big showdown in Swan Song (friggen epic and perfect use of music to scene, the soundtrack for the Apocalypse is hella good).
First you have to be the luckiest woman ever to actually interview Jensen & Jared! You seem to have a real connection with them it shows in your interview! So congrats to you! As far as Jensen saying " it's not for free " even if he was joking around I don't care that southern gentleman attitude goes along with the whole perfect man persona! So what is it like being able to interview & befriend celebrities? I would love that opportunity I'm not one of those crazy screaming fans that cries or just screams ( I bet that gets old ) I would love to have an intelligent conversation about his acting ability! Im a huge movie & tv fan I appreciate when talented actors are still down to earth people it makes them some much more appealing! I'm an aspiring actress & would love to sit down with the cast & just hear stories & get advice & if Jensen & Jared happen to take their clothes off in mean time well who am I to stop them lmao! Sry had to add that in they are sexy!
I have to agree with Harmony those are all my picks too. As you can see there are several because SPN does a great job putting the right song with the right episode. I also love the song, and I don't know the name, in Heart with Sam and Maddison! The song though that describes Supernatural best and hopefully will continue to be used is Carry on My Wayward Son!!
My personal fave was the use of Fire Of Uknown Origin by Blue Oyster Cult! That's a song you almost never ever hear on "classic rock" stations anymore, so I thought it was fantastic that Dean would resurrect such a classic for a generation of kids who probably never heard it before!!!
To Suz: The song used at the end of Heart was Silent Lucidity by Queensryche!
Anything AC/DC.
All of the songs mentioned are awesome, I loved Fire Of Unknown Origin and Burning For You, both from Hell House and both by BoC, Silent Lucidity from Heart, Rock of Ages from Bloody Mary, Bugs and Swan Song (had anyone else noticed it was actually used three times?) Knockin' On Heaven's Door from Houses Of The Holy and Dark Side Of The Moon, and of course you can't forget House Of The Rising Sun by the Animals from Roadkill, that ghost had good taste in music. Oh, and definitely Eye Of The Tiger, especially when Jensen "sang" it at the end of Yellow Fever. Basically, if it's the classic rock, then I love it, I'm so glad they heard our cries and are working to bring it back!
