'Skins': Like Cadie, we're happy, well, happier

We have to give our readers some credit for telling us we should tune into MTV's "Skins" this week when we were ready to give up after the last episode. That's not to say we're 100 percent onboard after last week's disappointment, but this episode goes a long way to making us feel happy, well, happier.

Here's the good part. We liked the tone of this episode, cinematic at times. There's a fast cut editing style that's everywhere nowadays (even on The History Channel), which originated with MTV. It was that fast cutting that helped to label a generation as victims of ADD. The editing of this episode broke from that tradition with long still shots, pans and zooms. For a change, we could breathe and really get inside Cadie's (played by Britne Oldford) k-hole of a mind. We wouldn't be surprised if some were bored by the first half of this episode, because we're so used to continual movement in today's entertainment.

The other good news is that we like Cadie the character. She's all kinds of nuts with several levels of psychosis going on to match her multiple psychiatrists. Her parents are self-centered and don't really hear her. Her friends don't recognize her absence unless they need something from her. And what does she want? It's cliché, but she just wants to be liked for something other than her access to pills, her looks, and for sex - she wants to be liked for being her (groan, we know, but it's what we got from her). We know lots of teen girls who will relate to her feelings stemming from her loneliness, being misunderstood and for being treated like a trophy.

Now, all that praise doesn't come with some criticism. We remain impervious to Tony's (James Newman) charms, which makes it hard to believe that he can lead this group of ne'er-do-wells let alone keep an entire city of teens believing he's cool. This actor still hasn't convinced us. And we still believe Tony's feelings for lesbian Tea (Sophia Black-D'Elia) is one of the biggest copouts of the series and doubly offends our intelligence.

Either way, this episode brought our attention back. And since it was supposedly the first episode written by the New York team, it gives us some hope that the level of storytelling around Cadie may continue with the other characters in the remaining episodes.

"everyone will disappoint u. they wont mean to but they will. no amount of drugs will change that" -- best line in the episode. so sad. and so real. this felt like a genuine episode of skins. i'm love the progress.

that needs to get cancelled... that show crosses lines that don't need to get crossed on cable tv

Impossible to like Cadie if you've seen her UK counterpart, Cassie. That character and the actress who played her were perfect, and she was definitely the best part of that show.

What is so wrong with just keeping the original skins? The characters acting and writing can't b matched. I agree with above cassie was one of the best characters in skins watch the original and ur opinions of skins will change it's not child pornography it's real life

I agree this was a vast improvement over the first few episodes. She'll never compare to Cassie, but I like that they're taking her in a bit of a different direction.

terrible and rach, let me be here to debunk you. i am one of the biggest fans of the original skins. been watching it since day one. and cassie is one of my all-time favorite characters on tv. well, guess what? i love cadie. of course she'll never compare to cassie because they're not the same, there isn't anything similar about them. it's useless to compare. this isn't a war between two versions. and i'm not determined to be a snub either. cadie was a well-written character, the actress who played her delivered and you all know it. that said, skins usa still needs improvement but with cadie's episode, i saw progress. i hope they keep it up because this episode proved that they can be pretty good when they choose to be.

as for jay, what lines were crossed that gossip girl, 90210, true blood, etc. hasn't already crossed? just because skins makes it more gritty and real, it offends your sensitive senses more? watch the original skins and then get back to me with your hands clasping your pearls so tight.

You know. I wasn't a fan of Cassie. I liked how Hannah Murray portrayed her... But no. The constant bubbliness, and "wow" -iness was just plain annoying. She had little to no development in the two seasons we saw her in, other than her relationship with Sid. Which was sweet, yes, but not enough for me. I had highhhhh hopes for her in her episode in season 1, but afterwards, (while brilliantly acted) the character just kind of didn't warrant any sort of yearning to see more from her. The anorexic/bubbly/introverted chick. Good combination, but without any sort of developmental depth, it's just another good idea. On topic of course, I'm loving Cadie. She's shown more depth in her one episode than Cassie really ever did. We see WHY she feels the way she does, WHY she pops pills, WHY she puts up with people who walk all over her, and other things of course. I love how introverted and relative Skins is making her. Don't know, yet nor do I care if the masses disagree. Meh. Just my thoughts I suppose. Excuse the ramble :3.

SHE WILL SAVE THIS SHOW FROM CANCELING.

why is this show still on air?
Week after week less & less people are tuning in.

"Release me from this lonely world
There is no hope - why don't you

Pull the plug
Let me pass away"

Death: Pull The Plug.

Its also pretty bad that A Lot of people cant even remember Cadies name.
A alot of people call her Katie.

Also why is it rated "MA" if the key target is 12-17 year olds.

Its rated 18+ in Canada. shown at the same time just not on MTV. I might not care for the show at all but at least its rated (what I think) is a proper rating.

Prediction for next weeks episode: less viewers
