Nathan Fillion talks, 'Firefly' fans listen (and pledge their money)
"Firefly" is coming back to television in a couple of weeks; the Science Channel starts re-airing the show's first and only season on March 6. But there's a new groundswell to get more than just reruns on your screen.The campaign kicked off last week following an interview with "Firefly" star Nathan Fillion, who told EW that "If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to 'Firefly,' make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet."
That was all the Browncoats needed. Following the interview, a website called Help Nathan Buy "Firefly" and a Facebook group of the same name launched. As of this posting, the Facebook group has more than 18,000 fans, and the site says it will start taking pledges (though not actual dollars) from fans soon.
While it probably wouldn't take $300 million to relaunch "Firefly," money is not the only issue in play. Leaving aside the fact that Fillion ("Castle"), creator Joss Whedon ("The Avengers") and other members of the cast and crew have other jobs now, there's also the matter of buying the rights to the show. The show was produced by 20th Century Fox TV, and it's not interested in selling the property.
Even if the fund-raising effort doesn't amount to anything, though, it at least shows that eight years after it was canceled (and five-plus after the follow-up movie "Serenity" was released), there's still a devoted fanbase for "Firefly." If they're willing to shell out their own money to bring the show back to life, maybe someone will take note.

Contractual obligations aside, I guarantee that everyone involved in that show would be down. If there were no corporations that would prevent, the people that made that show have so much integrity that they'd do it for minimum wage. That's what's missing in today's world of pop-culture: INTEGRITY. Listen up all you whiny little Glee fans, this is what REAL television is about.
I wouldn't get my hopes up for a new full-length TV series. Maybe another movie or a miniseries. But unless fans want the roles recast, I can't see a new series as long as, for example, Castle continues strong.
I have never seen Firefly, but I have to say that it's fans have to shut the f^@k up. You already won. Do you have any idea how many shows have been cancelled and got no ending? Firefly was one of the few that actually got a movie, and you still won't shut up.
@Justin
Why should they shut up? And why all the bitterness? Did a Firefly fan **** in your cereal?
Some people like a show and would like to see more. If it's not hurting you, what's the big deal?
I'll never understand hating someone because they like a TV show you don't. Is this really the point we're at as a society?
Seriously, take a step back and re-read what you wrote. Then maybe evaluate whats going wrong in your life that you need to spew that kind of vitriol over a TELEVISION SHOW. And unclench too.
Farscape All day long, a much better show and John Crighton was a much better leading man, I love Firefly but you cant beat Farscape.
Love Farscape, but that show had a four year run, plus an extended movie to bring closure to the series. And at least Henson has the rights to the show, unlike Firefly's situation. 20th Century Fox is just slimy. The screwed over the show when it first aired, moving it around in the schedule and pre-empting it, and now they won't let it go. Given Firefly's enduring popularity, their handling of the show has to be one of the biggest blunders in the history of television.
On Fillion's show "Castle" last night, the characters referred to the Firefly series for at least the second time on the show (the first being when Fillion's character dressed up as Mal for Halloween last season). During the show, his mother was referring to going to a spa called the Oasis of Serenity and says to Fillion's character, Castle, "You haven't heard of the Serenity" and he got this big grin on his face as he looked over at his daughter. Serenity, for those who don't know was the name of the spaceship in Firefly.
Hey Justin. Calm down dude.
Didn't know anything about the show, but after I found out (which was after Serenity came out) I was a big fan of Firefly..and shouts out to ya Rob--Farscape was DEFINITELY the sh*t! No one was EVER more awesome than John Crighton! I STILL miss that show!
Wow, I had no idea "Firefly" fans were so sensitive. I was just saying that you "Firefly" fans are still fighting a war that you already won. I never said anything bad about the show, like I said in my first post I have never seen the show. If I were a fan, I would just be so happy I got a movie, and would just shut up about it already. I just find the over-reaction to what I said in my first post so funny.
