'Modern Family' serves up a wedge salad

modern-family-wedge-salad.jpg
The Feb. 23 episode of "Modern Family" started off, "Memento"-style, with the aftermath of a blow-out fight between Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) and the slow piecing together of how it happened in the first place.

Phil's numerous annoyances and bad habits are all brought to his attention by Gloria (Sofía Vergara), but the dim husband still doesn't know exactly set his wife off.

Finally, it's revealed that Claire is just sick of her husband taking other people's recommendations and not her own. She finally boils over when Phil discovers his love for wedge salads, after the prompting of one of his friends -- despite the fact that his wife has been trying to get him to try them "since they started dating."

We love "Modern Family," and the whimsical misunderstandings it presents us with each week, but are we to believe in 2011 there is anyone in the western world who hasn't had a wedge salad?

If there are indeed wedge virgins among you, please remedy the situation as soon as possible. Your life, like Phil's, will be changed forever.

You write as if all cultures in the western world eat wedge salads. I going to venture a guess that in overweight America thousands of people don't even eat a garden salad every once in a while much less one of a specialty variety.

Never heard of a wedge salad in my life

I don't know if a single person outside the US has ever even heard of a wedge salad. This episode was the first time I'd come across it, and I'm a massive foodie. America isn't the world.

Um, yeah. What the hell is a wedge salad?

If you stop going to McDonalds and Burger King you all will know what a wedge salad is. I even think your "fancy" food chains such as Applebee’s and Red Robin would have them. I feel sad for society.

I eat out a lot - from $100 a plate to Subway...

Never heard of a wedge salad till last night.....

I'm American and although I've heard of a wedge salad, I have never had one and have no idea what distinguishes it from any other type of salad. Of course, I don't eat salads AT ALL.

So, Mikey, are we to believe in 2011 there are people out there who think everyone eats the same things as everyone else? Seriously?

Also, I've never eaten pizza and have no desire to try. Yes, that's right, so if you ever again see a storyline about people who don't eat things you personally take for granted, you should consider refraining from verbalising your disbelief.

Last night was the first time I had ever heard of a wedge salad.

I adore salads and fresh greens like no one's business, but I have a hard time grasping that a wedge of iceberg lettuce with dressing and bacon is that awesome. Iceberg lettuce?? ICKKKK.

@AM: You've NEVER had pizza? Oh, you must try it once. There are so many toppings, so many crusts, fantastico!
