Meet Adrianne Palicki: 'Wonder Woman's' roots revealed

adrianne-palicki-friday-night-lights-320.jpgWe've all been waiting with bated breath for the casting of David E. Kelley's "Wonder Woman," and now we've finally, finally got a name: "Friday Night Lights" alum Adrianne Palicki. The immediate response for the casting has been almost entirely positive (though the script itself has been almost universally panned).

If you're not familiar with Palicki, here are the basics. The 27-year-old hails from Toledo, Ohio and, an athlete at nearly 6 feet tall, is about as physically formidable as a hot girl can get. No stranger to the Sci-Fi genre, Palicki first pinged our radar as Kryptonian Kara on "Smallville" before Laura Vandervoort stepped in to play the real Supergirl.

She also appeared in the "Supernatural" pilot and several subsequent episodes as Sam Winchester's ill-fated girlfriend, Jessica Moore, who... well, died in a spectacular fire before the pilot was over.

Of course, Palicki is best known as Tyra Collette on "Friday Night Lights," where she started off as an underachieving, promiscuous lost cause and ultimately became one of the series' most heartwarming, inspiring success stories. (And this is a show full of heartwarming, inspiring success stories.) Palicki played Tyra with a tough edge right up until the lights went out on the series finale.adrianne-palicki-lone-star-large.jpg

To put it bluntly, Palicki's got it all. She's gorgeous and Amazonian with an "FNL" level of talent and that force-of-nature je ne sais quoi that we hope to see in all of our pop culture superheroes.

She's definitely worthy of the role -- the question is whether the role is worthy of her. Kelley has a dismal track record when it comes to writing strong, capable women -- he tends toward "quirky" female characters who are a bundle of frayed nerves and bared insecurities.

Kelley's Wonder Woman has three identities - Diana Themyscira, a billionaire with her own business empire, fidgety, insecure assistant Diana Price, and of course, Wonder Woman. The script includes an ice-cream fueled pajama party, a "Single Ladies" musical cue, and the line "Big tits save lives!" as Diana approves the design for a Wonder Woman action figure.

Ugh.

After the rather spectacular crash and burn of "Lone Star" in the 2010 fall season, our fingers are crossed that "Wonder Woman" becomes the vehicle that turns Palicki into a household name. We're just pretty sure it'll need a total overhaul first.

What do you think of the casting news? Check out one of our favorite moments from Palicki's work below, plus an interview clip, before you make your call. Can she do justice to the iconic role?

Adrianne is a good choice, but the reviewer here said it best, the material is not up to what she is capable of. I also think Kelly is a a completely wrong choice to do this. At least to do it right. Big **** save lives?! WTF?!

Not bad, I could think of a few better, but they definitely could have done worse. She's a pretty good actress. Still, the way the script was described makes me think Smallville will be viewed as a genius compared to this. Does David E. Kelley even know who Wonder Woman is? She's not "fidgety and insecure" for one thing, and she doesn't have pajama parties. I normally try to reserve judgment on things that I haven't seen yet, but all of the bad things I keep hearing about the script is making that really hard to do. I really hope they don't butcher WW's return to TV like this.

Explain again why she needs a total of three personas? WHats wrong with DIana T. and Wonder Woman -- imagine it - she's having a board meeting and needs to get away to save the world!

I think this is doomed from the start with a
schizo phrenic main character.

Not a bad choice, but she's no Lynda Carter. I withhold final judgement till I see her in the suit. She's tall and athletic, but a bit skinny in my opinion. Hopefully she'll beef up a little prior to filming the pilot.

And for those that have criticized the script I think we just have to wait to see the pilot. I'm sure there will be many changes between what's been seen on paper and what gets shot.

I'm thinking the fidgity and insecure part is her character in " Clark Kent" mode. As long as the goofiness stops when she becomes Wonder Woman, I will be happy.

If there's a chance NBC's Wonder Woman and ABC's Charlie's Angels get green lit for the fall TV season, they could go at it with the same time slot on the same night like CSI vs. Grey's Anatomy or NCIS vs. GLEE.

To the commenter who said that you hope she beefs up: her cheeks get hamster sized when she gains the least bit of weight. She has to stay super thin so her face won't spread like what we've seen in the past. She's just not pretty enough to play Wonder Woman. Diana is the supposed to be one of the most beautiful women on Earth in the DCU. That's just not Adrianne! I'm sorry; I'm sure that she's a lovely girl. They need to find someone else because I don't see real WW fans accepting someone playing WW with only mediocre looks.

not a bad choice but adriannie is no linda carter i hope this new wonder woman wull be amazing lynda carter was amazing as wonder woman

Lynda Carter was extremely stunning (let's not forget her curves). This woman is just unattractive and no way will she fill her shoes, this is poor casting....with all the gorgeous brunettes around they made a pretty bad choice.

Nice pic for wonder woman!
what about that hot military chick
