Final Oscar ratings down 10 percent from last year

oscar-hosts-show-320.jpgOfficial Oscar ratings are in! ABC's broadcast of he 83rd annual Academy Awards was watched by an average of 37.6 million viewers, with a 24.6 rating and a 37 share in households. The show posted an 11.7 rating in adults 18-49 according to time zone-adjusted fast national ratings from Nielsen.

This represents a 10% dip in viewership from the 2010 show, down nearly 4 million viewers and 1.4 points in the target demo -- so unfortunately, ABC's attempt to reach younger viewers with hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway was futile. Still, the show was the most-watched entertainment broadcast of the year, since last year's broadcast on March 7, 2010.

The 2010 broadcast was extremely highly rated, but it appears that the novelty of 10 best picture nominees has officially worn off.

ABC's "On the Red Carpet" half-hour pre-show was very successful, drawing its largest audience since 2007 with 26.4 million viewers.
