'American Idol': John Wayne Schulz previously released an album - at 14 years old
"American Idol" hopeful John Wayne Schulz impressed both us and the judges in Austin, TX with his lovely rendition of "Believe" by Brooks & Dunn. He also charmed viewers with his adorable family, including his breast cancer survivor mom. But it isn't the first time Schulz has pursued his music dream. Billboard reports that Schulz recorded an album as a teenager -- actually, at a mere 14 years of age -- that was released by Texas-based independent label BSW Records.
We've love to get a hold of Schulz's album, titled "Ropin' Dreams," if just for curiosity's sake. We certainly don't think this precludes him from auditioning or competing on "American Idol" -- the album happened nine years ago and was a small, independent release.
What did you think of John Wayne Schulz?

He's "okay" - I don't like twangy singing - but he's very sweet.
Doesn't that make him ineligible since he's already released an album?
David Archuleta won Star Search when he was younger. Adam Lambert made an album before Idol. Actually, many of them have. I think it's unfair, personally. It kind of ruins the premise of the show. How is a nobody like Jason Castro who's been singing for only a few years supposed to compete against a polished singer who's sung professionally like David Aruchuleta (granted, I like David more, but still)? Then again, obviously their earlier albums flopped, so they're still nobodys, which may qualify them for the show. Tough decision.
Seems like MANY AI contenderes have had previous CDs and still made it to the finals (in case you've forgotten--last years Lee Dewyze had 2 CDs that flopped, then won AI, and seems to be a flop again. Seems a bit hypocritical since I can also remember people being DISQUALIFIED after it was discovered they already had made a CD.
Ok John should not be disqualified because of that. He's an amazing singer and an amazing friend. I kno him personally and he is one of the sweetest and funniest people you will ever meet. Honestly I didn't even know that he had an album. Like the people above me said, other past idol winners and contestants have either had an album or some sort of singing recogination before. So my personal opnion is to let him stay on the show. He will not dissapoint!
I AM JOHN WAYNE'S BIGGEST FAN. He is SO amazing!!!
I think he made Texas look good! I'm proud to say I am from the same state as him. He has an amazing voice with an amazing attitude towards life. I loved when he sang, it sent chills down my back. He is very well mannered and I would love to meet him! Just because he had a CD when he was NINE means nothing? He was young his voice has changed and he went through puberty. It's been long enough so get over it. He deserves a chance just like everyone else.
He has got my vote. I loved his voice and his personality. Can't wait to see him when he is out on the road.
Love him! I love you John Wayne Schultz! I'm your biggest fan!
