'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena': Meet Dustin Clare as Gannicus

spartacus-gannicus.jpg"Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" was initially conceived to satisfy fans of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" while star Andy Whitfield underwent cancer treatment, but the prequel series maintains a storyline fresh enough that new fans could join in on its Friday night premiere without missing any essential information.

While we're thrilled to revisit Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) and Batiatus (John Hannah) in what Lawless refers to as their "honeymoon stage," a host of new characters also demand our attention - and perhaps most notable is Gannicus (Dustin Clare).

Clare plays the rockstar-esque gladiator who represents a new, more ruthless House of Batiatus. The Australian actor is a relative unknown in the U.S., having several Australian series with middling success under his belt. He plays Gannicus with a bravado that somewhat echoes, without imitating, the performance of Whitfield.

All in all, it was an hour of what we've come to expect from "Spartacus" on Starz -- namely bloody fights, unexpected sexual escapades, and cinematic imagery. Heck, the premiere even threw some drugs and defecating. (Not together.)

What'd you think of the new, revamped "Spartacus" -- of course, minus the Spartacus part? Weigh in below.

Thoroughly enjoyed it especially with the blood and gore component. Will keep watching

The blind-folded unfair market fight was a bit much for me. And I watched all of Spartacus: Blood and Sand without blinking an eye. Still loved the show. I'll be back for the next installment.

Absolutely loved this show it just and essential right mixes of action, gore and drama...well done starz this series is great!!!

Really liked it. I've been waiting for this show and I was not disappointed, loved Blood and Sand. And I liked the blindfold fight, it was in keeping with the unexpected twists and turns, I thought for a moment they would really kill the brand new face of the show in the first episode. Thats good TV!

baraye dan

was kinda disappointed cause i wanted to see what happened next from last season, but the new show is just a great as the last. this way it will give u more info on the house of batiatus.

I think the show is suprisingly good considering the characters and the plot we enjoyed fromthe first onehave either changed or not shown up yet, however as you've stated Gannicus is refreshing tot he show, I hope when he falls, as he surely will that they do it in a way not to hurt the character they've built, meaning I'd like him to die in a fashion like maximus, where they severely hurt him secretly before battle yet he fights anyway, only he loses, so at least we are all left to wonder what if

This season is terrible super boring. they could have done a million times better.. get on with it. 4 so far 2 left? terrible.. the first season was amazing.. thrill after thrill but this season wow what a let down. terrible acting terrible script .. boring ,, and enough with all the penis. Never sen so much **** in my life... no need for it. show the fighting already.. that is what mad the first season.. show the passion. lets guess mm the last episode will be when they kill the dad? and animais kills ganicas and his wife.. mmm if that happens then that is lame.. kill the dad already and get on with it.. who cares about ganicas.. I am sorry but why have a 2nd season if you can't top the first one?

so sorry to those that wish death for gannicus but if you know anything about the actual real life events this show is centered around you would know that gannicus is one of the slave leaders in the third servile war. Now what's happens inbetween these times is a mystery that I personally can't wait to see

I agree with usedtobeafan. BORING! The writing stinks, sometimes laughable and definately the nudity and sex scenes are ridiculous. It's like they think they have to fill in for the bad writing. It makes the show even worse. I Loved the old Spartacus!
