'Smallville' and 'Supernatural' postponed: Mid-season premieres pushed back one week
That noise you just heard was the anguished cry of fangirls and (and fanboys -- sorry, didn't mean to leave you guys out) en masse. The CW announced on Thursday afternoon that the expected Friday, Jan. 28 mid-season premieres of "Smallville" and "Supernatural" will be postponed for one week to air Friday, Feb. 4 instead. On Jan. 28, re-runs of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Nikita" will air in the 8 p.m. EST and 9 p.m. EST slots.
We're sad too. Don't they know that a week is actually two years in hellatus time?
As to why the network made the change? Reps say The CW hopes that re-airing the "The Vampire Diaries" in a timeslot that doesn't compete with ratings juggernaut "American Idol" will help to boost total viewership.
The last-minute move is not about testing out "Vampire Diaries" and "Nikita" on Friday nights; they've been successful on Thursdays and are likely to remain there. Additionally, there is no danger that "Smallville" and "Supernatural" will be canceled mid-season or pulled from the schedule before Clark gets his cape and Sam gets his soul.
Next Wednesday, Feb. 2, the network will air "Smallville" and "Supernatural" repeats of "Icarus" and "Appointment in Samarra," so you can be all caught up for the series' returns. The intention is for those reruns to subsequently boost total viewership for "Smallville" and "Supernatural," just as "The Vampire Diaries" and "Nikita" had catch-up reruns aired this week before their premieres.
In the meantime, you can check out a first look clip of Chloe's return to "Smallville" in "Collateral" and our advance review of "Supernatural's" return "Like A Virgin."
We know. That doesn't make you feel any better at all.

Eff you, CW. Eff you.
@scott: It isn't. This is about TVD, not about SV and SPN. Basically, TVD and Nikita didn't do all that well in repeats last night, so they hope to nurture both on Friday and throw SV and SPN under the AI bus.
It's a really bad strategy to pull new eps for encores ONE DAY before they air. If they plan to murder SPN (SV's ending in any case), they are doing a great job there.
Is it wrong that I suddenly have a bad feeling that this is Fringe related and not American Idol related?
@timotey Nikita did well in a repeat yesterday so I don't know what you're talking about.
Die in a fire, CW. No, really. I was looking forward to SPN all week.
You're making it seem like only girls watch Smallville. which is a LIE!
FANBOYS FTW!
Sorry but not all SV or SPN fan's are fan girls. Visit K-site and you'll find this to be more then true and I find their reason to be full of Crap. Its bull, unprofessional and insulting. And many many ppl who do not scour the net will not even be prepared for this sudden change.
Are they Kidding or WHAT?? Just ONE DAY before it'd be aired after we've been waiting for it 2 month?
It's just ridiculous, absurd! And yeah it smells of Fringe stuffs more than American Idol.. c'mon.. CW sucks !!
Please, lets not pretend that this move has a THING to do with caring about Smallville and Supernatural, and making sure they get the most possible viewers. The CW won't lift a finger to help with that. This is about coddling 2 series, Vampire Diaries and Nikita, that the CW obviously doesn't feel can compete with the big dogs at all.
I'm lucky in that I only recent caught up to Smallville and I am not caught up to Supernatural, so things don't look too bad for me. Shame for other people though.
