'Skins' cancelation rumors: MTV stands by show while advertisers and viewers scatter

Apparently, Tuesday (Jan. 25) wasn't another happy day over at the MTV offices. When the ratings for Episode 2 of its American remake of "Skins" came out, it showed all the controversy didn't translate into viewers for the network.

"'Skins' is definitely in danger of being cancelled if the ratings aren't great," an inside source tells FOX 411. "And MTV is not going to risk losing advertisers over one show."

According to the site's sources, the mass advertiser exits could cost the network $2 million per episode. And combined with losing about half its viewers from the premiere -- 3.3 million viewers dropped to 1.6 for the second episode - the show will be on thin ice.

"There was definitely some kind of 'all-hands-on-deck' situation going on," a different inside source tells the site.

In response to their story, MTV issued the following statement of solidarity to the site:

Skins has earned the loyalty of fans across the globe for its thoughtful and honest portrayal of teen life today. An internationally acclaimed scripted drama, the show has been honored with a long list of prestigious awards.  MTV stands by the US adaptation of Skins and the vision of its creator Bryan Elsley.

By the way, not all advertisers are running from the show. According to TMZ, one company is considering buying time on the program. The LifeStyles condom company thinks it may be a good fit.

Do you think "Skins" is worth all this trouble for MTV?

It's a tv show people. But for once, this stuff actually happens in real life. People are offended like, "Oh my, my kids shouldn't be seeing that on television!" when they are probably doing the same things behind your back. If you don't like the show, don't watch it. Some people can't handle the truth.

I do however think that US Skins has been alot more sexually ramped up than UK Skins. But that's what Americans like, sex sells. UK Skins was so much better.. it's one of a kind. If you haven't seen it, look it up. I will continue to watch US Skins though, because I'm interested in seeing what happens with these kids in the end.

I haven't seen the US Skins, but being a massive fan of the UK version, I was really surprised to hear what seems like half of America was repulsed by their version... Is it really so much more controversial than the original series? Maybe US production companies should stop making their own versions of our shows & invest in the original & quite frankly better UK shows instead.

(& yes, for the record, that WAS a thinly veiled dig at Being Human & Torchwood!)

some things aren't meant to broadcasted (real or fake) on tv.. wouldn't hurt to get cancelled. If MTV can only get rid of Jersey Shore.....

The only reason it should be cancelled is if the ratings drop even more. The show isnt good at all compared to the UK version.

you know this show is crap right?

HORRIBLE adaptation of the U.K. version. I thought America and MTV were supposed to push the envelope and be risque... and they've managed to sterilize one of the most raw teen shows ever made. No nudity, no curse words, no risque sex scenes, no guns. I'm not saying these things are needed to produce a quality program, but if you're going to shy away from them, WHY DID YOU EVEN BRING 'SKINS' TO AMERICA? And to be honest, I find 'Jersey Shore' to be more harmful to teens than 'Skins'. You can't advocate sex and nudity but you can promote skin cancer? Nice, MTV. Nice.

I'm a uk version fan for sure. mtv trying to remake it sucks! they didnt even change the names of all the characters or the plot its the same. and the uk version has cute people and i will never watch the american version i hope it gets cancelled for sure
