Miss America Pageant 2011: Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska is crowned 90th anniversary winner

miss-america-2011-teresa-scanlan-miss-nebraska.jpgA petite corn-fed Midwestern girl was crowned the 2011 Miss America when Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan took home the tiara during the 90th anniversary of the pageant.

At 17 years old, Teresa is the youngest pageant winner since the first winner in 1921, Margaret Gorman, who was only 15.

For her talent, Teresa performed "White Water Chopsticks" on the piano. She was the only contestant who didn't dance or sing, so that was refreshing (though the yodeling ventriloquist Miss Arkansas was the best).

For her question, she got asked about WikiLeaks and balancing the public's right to know versus national security. She said that national security comes before the public's right to know, which is a good Miss America answer, especially in the literally 10 seconds they were given to answer their questions.

Congratulations to Teresa on becoming the new Miss America! If you need a recap of the pageant, check out our live blog.

Worst choice ever! She is harsh and phony. Her recorded speech was so unnatural it was unbelievable. Her answer to the question was so canned, kiss adoubles and right wing it was pathetic. There is nothing fresh and natural about her...she seems
so contrived and calculating.
..she actually looks like she is 30.

Not loveley not miss america..more like a fake bleach blonde with an agenda that is self agrandizing and totally lacking in grace and humility which are qualities a miss america should posess.

BOOOOO

There were many other more deserving contestants...Oklahoma, Hawaii even Arkansas were more graceful than this bull in a china shop

I'm from NE and I agree, I would not have selected her either. I thought she was fake too, but maybe it is her age, just immature. Hopefully she will grow into a Miss America that is graceful and giving, not the self-absorbed girl that gave that recorded speech at the beginning of why she WILL be the next Miss Am. The others commented more like they were in the Bachelor.

**sorry**
that last sentence was supposed to be:
The other girls commented like they were in the Miss America pagent, unlike Miss NE--who sounded more like she was on the Bachelor.

Just goes to show you that Nebraska brings them up right. When she was asked about our Nations security over the Public's need to know, she answered absolutely correct. Afterward you can read the history of what happened.

That much common sense from a 17 year old girl. That does give one hope for this country's future. We hope there are more like her all over the country.
