'How I Met Your Mother': John Lithgow is Barney's dad
Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) recent decision to meet his father is going to have a swift pay-off. John Lithgow ("Dexter") will join "How I Met Your Mother" for a February episode, as our favorite player's long lost pops.
Co-star Cobie Smulders broke the news in an interview on the TV Guide Network, saying "It's really exciting and different for our show. He's such a pioneer."
The character actor has had quite a run, and after his brilliantly psychotic turn on "Dexter," it will be nice to see him tackle something with a little more whimsy.
And a dad isn't the only new person in Barney's life. TVLine reports former "General Hospital" actress Nazanin Boniadi gets a multi-episode arc later this season as his new love interest -- not the best news for those of you still hoping for a Barney/Robin reunion this season.

The choice is...wait for it...Awesome!!
I really used to like this site, but the constant amount of spoilers they put right in the headlines is getting annoying. Why not just say "Barney's Dad Revealed on HIMYM" or something and if I don't want to know, I won't open the article. It's getting to the point that you have to avoid sites like this entirely if you want any element of surprise left when it comes to TV or Movies...
That said, I think he is a great choice and I hope he comes on the series more than just once.
I absolutely HATED Robin/Barney -- putting the two most immature emotionally stunted characters together is funny for 1 or 2 episodes, but just gets unbearably grating beyond that.
Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Barney's dad, and I think John Lithgow is a great choice.
As for Barney and Robin, yeah, I want them to end up together, but not this season, so it'll be interesting to see him date a new woman more than once.
