Pilot Season: Tv of Tomorrow
FOX nabs Rob Thomas pilot, we pitch 6 'Veronica Mars' and 'Party Down' alums to cast in it
FOX has given a pilot order to the Rob Thomas single-camera comedy, "Little in Common."
Deadline reports that the "Veronica Mars" creator and "Party Down" co-creator earned the network's second comedy acquisition of the season.
A slight deviation for previous Thomas projects, "Common" follows three families who know each other via their children little league sports -- making it sound just different enough from the current barrage of couples-based sitcoms.
Work is no doubt well under way to cast the pilot, so how about we do a quick rundown of unemployed and underemployed actors and actress who have a relationship with Thomas that might find a place here:
Kristen Bell
Clearly! The Thomas muse will jump at any chance to work with her former boss. (Other than four anonymous message board commenters, she's the only person still actively campaigning for a "Veronica Mars" movie.) She's a tad young to play a mom, yes, but it wouldn't be the first time.
Ken Marino
An often unsung hero of comedy, Marino is the ideal sports dad. Just look at his performance as McLovin's obnoxious, disapproving step-father in "Role Models." And if you're worried about any conflict with "Children's Hospital," we're pretty sure it's not much of a time-suck.
Jason Dohring
This one comes equipped with a cult following. Plus: who wouldn't want to see an on-screen reunion between Logan and Veronica?
Martin Starr
Forgive us for playing into stereotypes, but Starr would be a fantastic foil to all of the playground competition. A cerebral, younger Woody Allen-type, he could play the dad who doesn't get wrapped up in all of the little league business.
Michael Muhney
What's that -- he has a job on a soap opera? Oh, then we're sure he's not interested in returning to prime time... Muhney holds the distinction of making one of the least-redeeming TV characters ever somewhat lovable with his accidentally funny portrayal of Sheriff Lamb on "Veronica Mars." He's at the top of our list.
Tina Majorino
As versatile of an actress as you could ask for, Majorino would be the perfect overprotective mother, running onto fields and biting her nails from the bleachers. A May/December match for Mr. Marino? Sold.
Clearly, the options are nearly limitless. Any friends of Thomas you'd like to be considered for "Little in Common?"

Love freaking love these ideas for the cast (but Muhney do very quite well on the soap Y&R (head writer freaking love him), he is leading man in it..but i agree if Rob wants him maybe he will take the opportunity..after all he is an actor, it is prime time, a Fox a big network..and Thomas write sooo much better than Soap opera ridiculous plot driven writers..we can't even compare actually..lol)
p.s: also anything written by Thomas is golden and anything to have Bell and Dohring on-screen together again..they have the best chemistry i have ever seen on a tv show..
I would also add Colantoni in this cast, yes he has a show but Muhney too..so what ?
I can totally see Marino and Starr in this type of show..and and also anything to have Jason Dohring on my screen again (i know he is scientologist..everybody is flawed guys..lol but the guy should be a movie star a la James Franco, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling..mesmerizing charisma he has.
This post just made my day! My television has been a sad, sad place since "Veronica Mars" was cancelled. Of course, one of the things that made VM so great was the talent and charm of its cast, and to see them together again in any type of new project would be amazing. Here's to believing Rob Thomas can reunite the gang.
Also, while my hope for a "Veronica Mars" movie has waned over time, kudos to Kristen Bell for keeping the dream alive. Love her.
I love this post! I really hope to actually see this! I love Veronica Mars so to see the cast together again would be awesome! :)
It is not so much that Kristen Bell is too young to be a mother (she is not) but that she does not really have the prescence to be convincing as an authority figure.
Veronica Mars movie??? I'm in.
Did you call yourself "also" because you posted a comment earlier? Because it makes it look like I was adding to my original comment. I do not really care either way about a Veronica Mars movie. "Also," I will not post again after this comment.
And I misspelled presence. :P
It all depends on how old the kids are. Just make Kristen a stepmom and problem solved!
If Martin Starr would be in this, we have to have Ryan Hansen too, as the never-grew-out-of-his-jock-status father! Those two were perfection together on Party Down.
And "Guest," if you don't think Kristen Bell could play an authority figure, you obviously never saw her on Party Down as Uda, the manager of a high-class catering company! She owned that role!
Excited to see this show...great thoughts on casting. Ryan Hansen should def. be added to the list. BTW there are more than Kristen Bell and 4 anonymous message board commenters pushing for a V. Mars movie...there is a facebook campaign and several others. Doubt it'll happen but I'd see it if it does :)
