'American Idol: Is Lauren Alaina the next winner?
The final audition of the day in Nashville on "American Idol" was 15-year-old Lauren Alaina, a sweet Georgia peach with a big voice. She started off on "Like We Never Loved At All," which was beautiful -- very pure tone and great natural talent. Then after her family came in to meet the judges, she sang her parents' song "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" (with a little help from Steven Tyler, naturally). We thought that piece was even better because she had gotten over being nervous and really let the notes fly.
She reminded us more than a little of the slightly-chubby, curly-haired Carrie Underwood from Oklahoma six years ago. After the auditions, Steven Tyler remarked that he thinks they found "the one" in Lauren, which also reminds us of when Cowell predicted Carrie would go on to not only win, but be the most successful "Idol" winner ever.
So what did you think? Was she all that and more? Or are you not buying into the hype? We aren't crowning her just yet, but we would not be at all surprised if Seacrest does crown her 16 weeks from now.
We'll post her audition footage as soon as we have it but for now here's a YouTube video of her singing "Anyway."

What a talent! Her voice gave me chills, can't wait to hear more, go Lauren Alaina!
Goosebumps are a good thing. Go Lauren!
The young girl, Lauren, has a pretty voice but I have heard better singers audition for this years american idol show. There will never be a better singer than Adam Lambert on this show. Adam has the great voice, the personality and he is extremely attractive. He is an all around talent. He should have won the american idol title in the season he participated in. There can be imitators but there is only one Adam. I voted for him on merit, because of his talent, which has nothing to do with his sexual preferences.
Luz, I'm a fan of Adam myself... I even bought his CD. But some Adam fans need to get over themselves (and him)... to say he is the best and there will never be someone better isn't true. There are people out there just as good, if not better. Adam himself would probably tell you the same thing.
Some still can't get over the fact he didn't win and continue to hold a grudge. Do I think he should have won? No doubt about it, yes he should have. But his loss isn't something to be angry about. Why? Because many like myself realize or believe that it is better for contestants on "Idol" to take 2nd place... to ride that wave of free mega publicity as long as you can without winning. This gives the person more freedom in the end to do what they want with their debut CD than the winner has.
allison is better
yes, Lauren sounds like she'll go far this season...and just so you know, Carrie Underwood is not the most successful idol, even though Simon predicted that. Internationally, that would be Kelly Clarkson.
Just not sure about the journalistic importance of pointing out she is chubby. Seriously, why does that need to appear in news? At 15 the girl hasn't grown into her body or confidence and bloggers are already pointing out her supposed flaws.
Sstoner, I was merely drawing a connection to Carrie in her first audition versus six years later. She changed a lot and Lauren reminds me more than a little big of how Carrie looked in her initial audition.
I didn't mean it as a flaw, I think she's adorable.
I think she was good and I like her bubbly personality. To be honest though, if it weren't for my curiosity about the new judges, I wouldn't watch Idol after Season 8. I found MY Idol (Lambert)
Idol is ONE of the reasons Rock has such a hard time in mainstream any more.Everything is either rap, country or pop! No rocker (chick or dude) has ever won Idol! So ask yourself..."do we really NEED another country artist?"
For me, the answer is a resounding "NO!"
Good luck to all of them but I can't wait until Adam Lambert comes out with his sophomore album! ROCK ON! Thanks.
Lauren, what a privledge to enjoy your gifted talent...
Team judges... what a perfect and professional blend..
