Pilot Season: TV of Tomorrow
ABC greenlights 'Charlie's Angels' remake, NBC shelves 'Rockford Files' for now
Pilot season is starting to grind into gear at the networks. Some of the latest developments:ABC has given the official go-ahead to a pilot for a remake of "Charlie's Angels." The new one will be set in Miami, and "Smallville" creators Al Gough and Miles Millar will write the pilot script. Drew Barrymore, who starred in and produced the two "Angels" movies in the early 2000s, and her partner Nancy Juvonen are among the exec producers. Additionally, one casting hurdle may already be cleared: Robert Wagner is reportedly supplying the voice of Charlie. [EW/Vulture]
NBC isn't going forward with its prospective "Rockford Files" remake -- at least not at the moment. The network shot a pilot with Dermot Mulroney as Jim Rockford last spring, didn't pick it up and gave it back to "House" creator David Shore to rework. His duties on "House" didn't leave him enough time this development season to revise the script. [Deadline]
FOX's first comedy pilot order of 2011 is called "I Hate My Teenage Daughter." It's a multi-camera show about two women whose daughters have become the types of girls who tormented the moms when they were in high school. Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") are writing it. [Deadline]

Charlie's Angels is my top favorite show of all time. I am not sure the "premise" to this remake is good. Miami instead of L.A. ? A white, black and hispanic Angel ? No guns ? Haven't they learned from past remakes/redux/updates....the more they stick to the original the better it is and the better it succeeds.
As far as the Rockford Files update, never saw a clip but it sounded really good and from the season NBC has had so far they should not have passed it up.
As much as I liked the original shows, these remakes don't sound interesting. And the new FOX show doesn't sound interesting either.
The problem with remaking a show like the Rockford Files was that Jim Rockford was irrelevant - it was the James Garner Show. Remaking shows that were primarily based upon an actor's personality are doomed to failure - see Bionic Woman for Exhibit A. Michelle Ryan's a great actress, but she was no Lindsay Wagner, and people forgot that the original show was about Lindsay Wagner, not about the bionics.
